Great episode. I donated to one of strike funds and it had me thinking about the purpose of union dues. When I was a kid, my mom would tell me stories of her father going on strike with fellow sanitation workers. Part of their union dues would help cover rent, utility bills, etc. that can't be covered with just strike funds or donations. That was one of the incentives of paying dues: It was like a collective savings that everyone could turn to in the event they had to strike. Of course strike funds and mutual aid have always been around labor unions, especially during a strike. But as strikes as a labor tactic have been on the decline and more emphasis has been placed on union attorneys and leadership, there's less money for workers to actually afford to strike. My question is, what can labor unions do to shift union dues more toward union strike funds and less toward paying stipends for labor leaders and full-time union attorneys?

Didn’t the Real News lay off 10 of 18 workers in the bargaining unit before Christmas 2020?
