Yes! Was looking forward to this review! Loved Sonic 2 more than the first one!

Glad to hear you had a fun time with Sonic 2. I’ve got greater news: Bohemian Rhapsody was recently added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. It was about time that a Queen song would make the Registry and I’m glad it’s one of their most iconic songs.

I seen Sonic 2 in theaters and for someone that never played the games or cartoons or even thought that the 2020 film was okay, I really did enjoy this sequel while even think it better than the first film. When I first saw the first film in theaters before the pandemic kicked in one month later, I thought it was okay as I thought the plot was predictable and cliche, weak writing that the script has, don’t some of the humor or even product placement like the infamous Olive Garden moment, and the ones that does not focuses on the Sonic lore itself. But I did how ever enjoyed other things like acting such as Ben Schwartz as Sonic and Jim Carrey as Robotnik, action scenes, the visuals especially with Sonic design since Paramount did listen to fans out there after seeing the terrible trailer of the infamous realistic looking abomination, and some of the humor mostly from Carrey were enjoyable. With this sequel, I was hoping it would do something a little different as a result, I really had a good time with this. The action scenes looked terrific, visuals were a top notch, performances were all great including Idris Elba as Knuckles, some of humor were enjoyable, some of the heart were touching, characters that relates to the games were solid, and world building is much more interesting than the first. However I do agree that the runtime is a bit too long, the script came weak, some filler moments including over at Hawaii feels pointless, and of course some of the popular culture references as I get it for the purposes of getting younger viewers attention. I overall had a good time with although I wouldn’t watch it like again again like I had with Spider-Man: No Way Home since that movie was the most fun I had in a theater in a long time since the start of the pandemic. I would give it a rare 7/10 for a video game movie adaptation just like how I give the Angry Birds Movie 2 that rating. The two movies I like the most more so than the first Sonic film and Detective Pikachu. Also, I would like to see if Paramount, Jeff Fowler, the producers and writers of the Sonic films to bring Jim Carrey back for Sonic 3 since he did announce that this would be his last film before retiring and he’ll only return if there is a right role for him as he is best thing to came out from the Sonic movies so I hope they bring him back. If not, then I’ll be happy to see him make a great retirement after all these years in making everyone laugh around the world. It a better film to watch compared to what I went through with a terrible Morbius movie in this month of April.

When it comes to the first Sonic The Hedgehog movie. I wouldn’t call it a great movie, but it definitely gave me a really fun time, and the Sonic redesign definitely paid off in the end. As for its sequel, honestly I have to agree, this was honestly a very fun movie and definitely gave me a great time and ended up being even better than the first. The film does a great job adapting elements from the games and having it stay true to the source material, the visuals are absolutely amazing, the characters especially the ones from the games are great and the action scenes are fun and awesome, the acting is also solid all around from the human cast and the Sonic characters, Jim Carrey is once again so much fun as Robotnik, Tails and Knuckles are great editions, and I really enjoyed Idris Elba as Knuckles and I’m really excited to see more of him in the Knuckles series coming to Paramount+ next year. The only major issue I had was that some of the parts with the human characters weren’t that interesting, but there are some good moments with them later on in the film. Overall, Sonic The Hedgehog 2 was an extremely fun movie that gave me such a great time and one of the most fun movies I’ve seen in a while and was even better than the first film. Overall it’s an 8/10 for me, it has some issues but it still gave me a great time. Also the movie does have a mid credit scene and without spoiling anything, let’s just say Paramount definitely has some big plans for the third Sonic movie and after seeing that scene, I am so excited for the third movie. Also it really is crazy to think how far we’ve come from that first trailer for the first movie with that horrifying design, to this where Paramount listened to the criticisms and changed Sonic’s design and it paid off in the end and now Paramount has a new major movie franchise under their belts with so far 2 movies with both a third movie and a spin-off series on the way, it just shows how Sonic’s design change paid off in the end.

In case you didn’t know, the film does have a mid credits scene and without spoiling anything, Paramount definitely has big plans for the third movie.

I have seen the mid credits scene in theaters before leaving but it looked like it might set up something real interesting when they are about to make Sonic 3 in the future. I even think this franchise might be the best thing that Paramount needed after their own franchise like Transformers and Star Trek are in decline right now so I hope I wish them well in handling the Sonic franchise well with a third film a Knuckles spin-off series in development.

I still have yet to see this myself, so I can’t judge it yet. Great review!

It's amazing to hear how Sonic 2 made an improvement from it's predecessor.

Hugo Segal

Crazy, yes. But given the financially precarious state that Paramount was in during the 2010 decade (“Transformers” and “Star Trek” aside), “Sonic” was the Hail Mary’s pass they needed and will absolutely need to compete in the Streaming Wars.

Justin Monti

You have a good point, Paramount really hasn’t had a new franchise in a long time besides stuff like Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission Impossible, in recent years the only new franchises they’ve managed to make successful are just Sonic and A Quite Place and that’s pretty much it.
