Hello patrons!

I'm delighted to say our third and final documentary on DOOM is now available. Including insight from lead level designer Jerry Keehan, and an interview with the game's composer Mick Gordon, "Guns, Guitars & Chess on Mars" dives into the music and gameplay pillars that all combine make DOOM 2016 what it is.

I hope you've enjoyed this series - but for patrons it's not over yet! Make sure to check your inbox (and the patron feed) over the next week for exclusive patron-only goodies including early access to our extended interviews, behind the scenes video and a postmortem Q&A.

Talk soon friends,

Danny

This doc is fantastic!

Danny, bravo man! Fucking nailed it! I was expecting high quality and you brought it home. Worth all the time, blood, sweat and demon brains! Here's some feedback that might be useful. Part 1 was very interesting. A bit slow, but made a nice build up and intro to the series. Part 2 was my favorite. You gotta have luck with the story you can tell and the great interviewees of course, but you made a great short doc out of it that captured me complete for the whole length. Loved it! Part 3 was again very interesting, but a bit slower in the beginning, though I loved the chess analogy very much. Both in it's analogy and the visual. But the beauty of this part comes in the climax about the soundtrack. Original, short and sweet. I watch a lot of game making related stuff, but I hadn't really seen anything like it before. Fucking brilliant! Well done, mate! Worth every penny and I would give you more if I could!

Martin

Absolutely fantastic Danny :)

A fantastic conclusion to the series! I love chess, so hearing, and more importantly seeing, the allusions to chess and its strategies was personally awesome. Also, the interview with Mr. Gordon was so rad. His performance at the Game Awards was one of the best, if not THE best, part of the show. It was really cool to hear what went into the soundtrack. A final thank you to all involved! This was so awesome.

Nailed it. 5/5. Hope you're taking a well earned break now!

Thx soo much for doing this Danny and Jeremy, Part 3 finished it all of beautiful, I especially liked the part about Combat Chess, and hearing the Approach Mick Gordon had to the soundtrack for the game. Can't wait to see what you come up with next :) Kind regards Kenneth from Denmark.

Man, I'm enjoying your work on these, Danny. Keep it up!

Rob Curran

As someone who has never played any of the Doom games, I get it now. I love the fact that they don't take themselves too seriously and that they just want the player to have fun. With that said, the demo is downloading now. Cheers Danny!!

Danny this was absolutely great. Thanks for making it!

The whole series is amazing, best part for me was the Mick Gordon talk, can't wait for the extended video of that!

Right back on track with Part 3 I thought. Much more going on than in Part 2. The musical composition segment in particular more than justifies the Noclip project. Real insight from a great interviewee well interviewed. Editorial tone felt much less corporate/promotional. Shows you don't necessarily need an international travel budget to do great work Danny! Well done. Curious to know why you didn't split this bit into a separate episode?

Piotr Kostecki

Love the insight from composer. Music in Doom was the element that fueled the demon-shattering experience :)

The full interview will be live next week. It was fascinating. And around 40 minutes long I think.

Thanks Dom! Let me try and answer that. In retrospect, you're right - I think we could have made an entire music episode. However the interview came in really late. We only managed to organize it last Friday (so right when we were in the middle of the final push). Adding an entire new episode to the series would have jeopardized the quality of the videos we were already working on. So I figured I'd extend that part of the third episode, and then people who want to learn more can enjoy the longer interview cut when we upload the extended versions. Good question, hope the answer was as satisfying!

noclip

Thanks so much Daniel, yeah that guy is so talented, and genuinely really nice. He even sent us a shedload of lossless music and b-roll to incorporate into the video. An absolute gentleman.

Danny, the first time I saw an episode of "The Point" was a big turning point for me and video games. It was the episode about the industry's tired use of Nazi's a generic enemies that embody pure evil and this justify all the violence in those shooters. It was the first time I'd seen a video that tried to address video games on an intellectual level that other forms of art so frequently demand of their viewership. I've been following you from that point on and was disappointed when you left Gamespot because I knew that meant the site would then become seriously uninteresting to me. However, seeing what this freedom has allowed you to do (now that the Doom vids have dropped), I am so excited for the future of NoClip. Thanks for calling this wacky world of video games to a higher bar of artistry and craft.

Just watched all three episodes and Danny they are amazing. Such a cool ride you took on us with Id. Can't wait for whats next

Travis M. Erickson

I suspect it took quite a bit of time to get those really nice shots of the chess board/pieces, but, for me, it was worth it. Using the board to demonstrate the enemy tactics was brilliant. Really enjoyed this series.

Saw all three episodes and the quality and content made me sign up on patreon for the first time. Looking forward to more great content like this!
