Some of you may know I've been building a Stormcast Eternals army over the last couple of years. I'll be sure to post pictures when the final piece of the puzzle is complete, the mighty Stardrake. This model is the reward I saved for the end, the centerpiece of my army, the godbeast unchained, the dessert that was larger than all preceding courses. As I've been painting that final piece I ran into a little problem using water effects and wanted to share what happened and how I corrected it.

The water effect I'm using works very well and comes from outside the miniature realm. The brand is SimpleStyle and the product is generically named Acrylic Water Kit. But it comes from the realm of floral arrangements. Basically it's the same thing being sold to you by miniature companies but you get twice the amount for the same price.

The problem that I run into is that the mixture creeps up the base after I pour it and this is true will all water effects I've encountered. About 4 now!

I should add that the picture above is showing two layers, cured and dry. The second layer behaved just fine because the first layer provided a slippery coating that contained any creep from it coming in contact with a dry area.

Every time I use water effects it's always been a few months and I have to learn all over again. My goal next time is to apply multiple layers of gloss varnish in order to create that slippery boundary. It's a theory that I'll be testing and I'll be sure to report what my investigation reveals.

But where is the win? Well, I learned something or at least have a new idea. I was also able to paint over the glossy area and achieve the look I was after anyway. Find a solution!

I won't tease you with just foot pictures of the Stardrake. Here's an overhead view as it sits, almost done! Mainly the Lord Celestant needs work, but not much, and when the time comes his cape will make a subject matter for a video.

Unchained!

I always have this problem too. But it manifests as a big old bubble of missing water effect. I've tried sealing the base with loads of super glue but I still havent got to the bottom of it.

It seems to be a gamble every time. Hoping it cures is low key nerve wracking haha, which seems like an oxymoron. I'm going to keep experimenting and master this untameable fluid.
