The Rant:

Well, this one was a doozy to make.

Part of the reason this took so long to make was:

  • Two characters means exponentially more work
  • The breakdown from two screens to three
  • Amber is a more complicated character than Abby, visually.

So, starting with that last one, even with her top gone, Amber still has her ponytailed hair (which I should probably break at some point) Even ignoring the bow, long hair isn't too much fun to animate because it doesn't have any internal/bone structure to animate around. Its why anime hair tends to feel stiff; its easier to animate/illustrate it as a single shape, rather than bundles of individual strands. Going down further, she still has her legging texture and a more realistic anatomy than Abby, so she takes a little longer to do.

Something else that I need to work on is the workload for more than one character in a single scene/shot. These have been taking longer and longer to do, and that's not exactly normal. Part of it is the impact of my day job on my free time (and the time I take to relax after getting home from work before jumping on the computer), and a lot of it is just a lack of planning on my part, which I'm trying to get better at.

As for the animation itself, this was a lot of fun! I'm getting a lot better at integrating traditional frame-by-frame animation with puppet/symbol animation and the results are getting better and better! That being said, its not a mastered skill yet, and that's part of what's contributing to delay. The hiccup is in the lighting and shading, which just aren't things I like doing when animating. But they do give my animations a sexy shine (especially the specular highlights), so I need to find a more efficient way of animating them.

And wow, I didn't think I could make Abby creepy in any fashion, but here we are! A lot of it is the lighting and how creepy it is for her to crawl in from the shadows. The other part of it is her eyes and giving her that Nabbirific glow. At this point in the story, what she swallowed here:

Is finally having an effect here:

Which doesn't bode well for Amber!

Either way, I hope the effect is sold well.

And last, but not least the sounds!

Princess Lil does a bangup job as Amber again! I considered either reusing the sounds from the last Game Over, or just going without, but, in the end, I ended up asking for the favor again; its just too dramatic a situation for Amber to not have any audible reaction!

I also added in slimy footsteps for Abby to sell how ominous her new demeanor is, as well as general slime noises for effect (and to sell the omnipresence of Nabby's current form)

Hope you guys are enjoying watching these, as I am making them!

Amazing work by both yourself and Princess Lil; really love how Abby emerges from the dark at the end, very spoopy, and the hypnotic sway of their struggles at the end is top notch :)

I enjoyed this, though I could tell it was a lot more complicated than usual. I definitely think you're improving a lot of your techniques, and Princess Lil does great at these kinds of vocals! I also assumed much of the hangup was due to the Covid-19 thing and work... I share the weight of working through this mess, it's doing a real number on my time (and my poor hands!), so I assumed much the same for you. Hopefully you manage to get some rest and some hearty work done as this progresses, it's always cheering to see your work!
