Howdy, wonderful people!

Models generally have a series of names before finally getting published, and this one was for a while named something like "screw-top square box", which is exactly what it is - a square-section box with a screw-in lid.  This mechanism has a few interesting aspects!

First and foremost, the box itself is square all the way down.  There are no protruding bits that interrupt the walls.  Instead, the threaded lid engages into grooves in the walls directly.  This is an evolution of the mechanism that held the Mechanical Easter Egg and the Mechanical Valentine closed, though both of those had sticky-outy bits for the closure.

Each corner of the lid has locator pins that match the box corners, and the articulated handle morphs into a bolt that threads into the box.  The pins are slightly longer than the bolt so that the bolt is brought into correct position before any rotation happens.

Print Description

This is an articulated print (well, the lid is), so make sure your first layer is nice and neat and that there aren't any print issues like overextrusion or stringing that might cause moving parts to bind together during printing!

Print Dimensions

The larger crate occupies 64mm x 64mm on the print bed and is 110mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

You could probably scale this up or down a little bit.  Too small, though, and the lid parts will be too close to print without binding.  Too large, and the lid will eventually no longer thread into the walls!  You might be able to mitigate all that with some judicious slicing settings, though :)

Print Orientation

The box prints right-way-up and the lid prints upside-down, like so:

Further Thoughts

What really has me inspired about this model is that the closure mechanism works really nicely without compromising the box itself.  There are a few boxes from years past that I really like, such as the Atom Case, which have a separate ring as a closure element, and I'm excited to see if I can add this kind of closure to it.  And maybe some gratuitous gears, we'll see :D

Happy printing!

Oh yeah, there's also a single-material version!

I can’t wait to get this on the printer. So few people make IDEX friendly designs while you consistently churn them out.

Multimaterial printing has really become so much more reliable these days! It's so cool that we can do this kind of thing! :D

Wondering: Is there any way to alter the design so they can stack without sliding?
