Hey there, wonderful people!

The name says it all on this one - very much inspired by the textures of chunky knitting!  Someone with more expertise in such textiles would probably also know what kind of stitch that's based on, but I just aimed to replicate the kind of patterns that always strike me as so tactile and recognisable.

Of course, we can't simply model such things directly, because overhangs are a thing, and because I was aiming for this to be printable in vase mode, which means there can't be any point where parts overlap to form a void.  Just as importantly, we can't have any steep angles in vase mode or else the overall structural integrity is compromised (well, unless that's the point, but it's not, at least not in this design!)

All that said, there are two versions of the vase here - one is classic vase mode, and one is a regular version that has a nice swirly interior texture:

Print Description

Nothing tricky at all here.  Both the regular and vase mode versions are designed for straightforward printing.  Obviously you'll want to set your slicer accordingly for the vase mode one.

Print Dimensions

The Knitted Vase occupies 89mm x 89mm on the print bed and is 170mm tall.

Supports needed?

No supports required!

Infill?

The vase mode version obviously has no infill!  Infill on the regular mode version can be relatively low, and won't really be needed for strength.

Scalability

Both versions will scale just fine up or down!

Print Orientation

Both versions print right-way up, like so:

File location

You'll find this one at 662 Knitted Vase

Further Thoughts

The funniest thing about this model is that my brain immediately thinks it must be soft, especially that print in the matte blue.  PLA, not soft.  The texture really is nice to hold, though - it could make an interesting handle if it was scaled down, somewhat.  And maybe printed in a softer filament :)

Happy printing!

xoxo

Sven.

That vase mode one is a dual-colour filament that has been rebranded under a few names but is manufactured by "gnvtntp" and sold under that name on Amazon! The regular mode one is Polymaker PolyTerra in a marble-style colour!

Like Laura said, stockinette stitch, and in the round. I can’t be the only knitter that prefers anything without a purl. Lol
