And lo, our concluding post for May will be a li'l work-in-progress dealie for the opening double-page spread—that is, pages 2 & 3—from the first story I'm working up for fantasy test comic The Chaste and the Chained.

Early on, my first take on this scene was a single-page "splash," but I had trouble with the captured Elf Mage's pose, as you can see from the Clip Studio Paint tweaks on her figure where I was scaling and/or correcting various elements:

After this, I not only chose to expand this image into a double-page spread, but to try a different take on the Elf's pose:

As you can see above, I had to draw her figure quite small to control her proportions better; I also referenced that wee sketch in part off of a "Body-chan" model:

So, here's the wee initial pose, in the corner of a letter-size piece of paper:

...then cropped up tight:

Then I pasted that sketch into the overall rough for the spread, which I'm still working up:

Still have a few areas on the spread to tighten up, as you can see; but that's where I'm at so far in this shockingly ambitious panorama, which might end up being my most complex double-page spread since, jeez, the opening of Titans: Scissors, Paper, Stone in '97.

UPDATE: Uh, nope, dumbass, as I somehow forgot this early spread from the upcoming Empowered vol. 12:

Anyhoo, back to the subject of The Chaste and the Chained!

Coming up in June, my plan is to start work on a "hybrid workflow" test that will combine analog and digital Work Stages, as seen in a recent C&C post from the beginning of May. This time, though, I'm going to use the approach on actual comic pages from Chaste's first story. Yay? Hope you'll stick around to see the work, dear Patrons; if not, perhaps you can check in on the content down the road.

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: No idea, TBH, but something should be coming up in the next M/W/F slot. Let's find out together, shall we?

Can hardly wait the month to get my hands on Emp Vol. 12 in July!

I find it ironic that your mannequin actually looks gagged.

Oh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhheeeeellll, he's out! THE GOAT'S OUT OF THE BELT!!!

JoJack86

Wow, love this!

Burninator

Sadly, I think it got delayed to November due to Mysterious Publisher Crap

Otaku Twenty-Four Seven

Wouldn't surprise me, I am just going by the release and delivery date on my pre-order from a certain A to Z e-commerce site

Burninator

Just checked, that riverine outfit is now saying November 28th as the release date.

Otaku Twenty-Four Seven

Yeah it's saying that for the rhymes-with-brindle edition but not the paperback, but that could be as I'm looking from the other side of the Atlantic and my localisation of that site hasn't updated the physical copy publication date yet

Burninator

Could also be a different printer or something and it really will come out in the UK first. If it does come out in the UK in July, I'll cancel my preorder at Local Comic Shop and import a British copy.

Unless EMP12 is being shipped in from an alt reality, I can assure you that it won't be out in July in any format, alas.

Otaku Twenty-Four Seven

I figured it was just an update that's not been applied yet, thanks for the clarification. More time to appreciate the anticipation 😉

Funnily enough, I actually had a dream a while back where I read a version of Cannibal Sun that had been imported from an alternate reality, although it went under the name Fatal Sun there for some damned reason. Unfortunately, the version in question was a badly compromised mess; the artist Alt-Adam used was brilliant but she blatantly Did Not Get the writing to the point that the images were often only vaguely related to what the script purported to describe. On the writing side, Alt-Adam shared the proclivity of the Adam of this reality to sometimes try and fit in too many interesting ideas for the length of the story, which was made even worse because the publisher cut the series from six issues to four after Issue 1 had already come out due to sales figures well below expectations, making for a less than clear plot. Only reason it got a trade release at all was that both Alt-Adam and the artist both went on to sufficiently renowned careers in that world that somebody thought they could make a buck or six releasing it as a reprint of a rare out of print early work with creator commentary, which was mostly an extensive list of gripes and axes to grind.

nice spread indeed
