Behold, the surprisingly difficult first page of a brief Empowered vol. 12 scene that I've dubbed "Young Emp and Superfriends," along with my page rough(s) and sketchy character designs for the sequence.

UPDATE: Tacked on a side-by-side image showing roughs and final art, worked up for promoting this post on Twitter. Yay?

Turns out that Artist Me just did not feel like drawing this scene one bit, but I was forced to stagger through the pages regardless, as these pre-teen character variations actually appear on the book's cover illo. Whoops! (Actually, one positive element of this wackiness was the amusing friction between a rather persnickety Spooky and a wholly nonchalant Ninjette, an unplanned riff which proved surprisingly entertaining.)

Also, this scene helps set up the volume's concluding action; speaking of which, this is prrrrobably the last Empowered vol. 12 preview you're gonna see for a while, as I'm now working on the book's final, SPOILER-intensive chapter.

Yeahp, we are now in the final, two-month push to complete this long-gestating installment. Yippee!

NEXT TIME ON THIS HERE PATREON: Not sure, TBH, but something will appear on M/W/F of next week!

That's an awesome intro shot, a classic hero splash, even if it did mean you had to spend time on boring buildings and such. Plus, for 'Jette and Spooky, I can only imagine those two characters snarkily bouncing off each other could be an absolute hoot. Very curious to see what you'll do with this.

I gotta admit, I love this! Kind of a Crimebuster feel to Emp's outfit, and the giant gloves are, I am told from a reliable source, just a lotta fun to draw. The towel cape is a subtle and very welcome touch, keeping us reminded of her dreams of childhood heroism, here seemingly given form somewhere between then and now. It hints at some very interesting storytelling. Heck, I wanna know why Spooky (Witchy-Poo FTW!) is wearing Gene Simmon's castoff footwear. Also, way to nail the adolescent body type for all of them. That head to body ratio, I has been told, is a bear, and you got it across all three. I have no idea where this comes in the arc for issue 12, or how it comes about or what's really going on, but Can't Hardly Wait. Watching your process is genuinely educational- you are a master class on this style of storytelling that is most definitely worth the tuition :)

Aaah, the age-old Wizard Question: Hat or Hood?

This scene really gives the vibe of a cartoon universe where Emp starts her journey to become a Superhomey at a really young age finding similarly different events from the Main Story with Younger versions of her allies -like Spooky, ´Jette and Thugboy, a set of Original Villains exclusive to this hypothetical universe... And still Emp has to deal with the Caged Demonwolf and his over the top advices, Looking forward for Volume 12!

Ooh, too cute. All the 'e's on Elissa's clothes are just such a little-kid notion of a superhero costume. Kosue dressed modestly in full ninja uniform is a treat, and it's intriguing - and heartwarming - to see her scared. As for Theresa, we finally get to see her as she really was when she was a kid, not the self-image tainted by childhood trauma. She's a cutie.

So excited for this volume. Also, Spooky's shoes are KILLER.

I guess Spooky sold her soul for infernal cuteness.
