In honor of San Diego Comic-Con this year—which, alas, I'm not attending, due to hotel-related shenanigans—here's an illo I drew for the con's booklet thingie back in 1990, not long before starting work on the miniseries Dirty Pair: A Plague of Angels. (I think.)

Pencils and inks by me, and lettering by the great Tom Orzechowski. I don't think that my friend Tomoko Saito did the screentones on this one, as the tone choices are too unimaginative and by-the-book to be hers—which means I must have cut 'em myself. (I'm oddly bugged by the fact that the Lovely Angels' irises aren't toned.) Note the X-acto-blade scraping on the tones' highlights and edges; this was year or two before I figured out that you could use an abrasive ink eraser to attain much smoother and aesthetically pleasing effects.

Love the details - the VHS cassette, comics with both "MAX" and "SAM" (and not a mere "SAM and MAX" comic), a little Watchmen bean juice button. This illo takes me way back (I was 20 in 1990 and reading your Dirty Pair work but I think I missed SDCC that year). Sorry you won't be at the Con. Still regret my dumb budgeting could not afford a commission from you last time you were there.

This is so cool to see. I love the Sam and Max nods you did in this era of DP
