SCOOBY DOO’s Velma, as Procreate sketch-test subject (Patreon)
Content
A week or so ago, I solicited your ideas for an art-request subject, at least one of which nominated Velma from Scooby Doo. As I’ve (shockingly) never drawn her before, I decided to use her for a test of brushes in the art app Procreate.
See, the rival app MediBang Paint has an oddly misnamed “pencil” brush that I love sketching roughs with, but I hadn’t found an analogue in Procreate—until, that is, a trio of digital-savvy young artists dropped by my table at Phoenix Fan Fusion last weekend, and showed me that the “medium hard airbrush” in Procreate could be used very much like MediBang’s “pencil” brush.
This brush isn’t quite as awesome as the MediBang “pencil”—which looks more like a watercolor marker, anyway—as its pressure curve is noticeably more abrupt. However, I definitely enjoy sketching with it more than any other Procreate brush I’ve tried so far. Thanks, digital-savvy young artists!
Might try s’more Velma sketches later on, as this set was reasonably entertaining. (Note that the rough at lower right was photoreferenced from a cosplayer, so I might hashtag this as “life drawing”... or not.) Hope y’all like the sketches!
UPDATE: Here's an Instagram link to a 30-second Procreate time-lapse video of me drawing this set, which I couldn't post here directly without an URL-based link (ughh):
