You may have to look up this word.  I find some Japanese traditions very interesting and I suggest that people might want to read my story "Shudo" about a particularly strange one.     I have been looking at an anthology themed around duty, meaning where an unexpected transition is prompted not by choice or compulsion but but a higher calling, and the Japanese are a people with a strong sense of that.
