A bit of Storytelling Shorthand at play here - we've actually had the solar panels for a while - but we do have a set. Unfortunately it is indeed only good for sunny and partly cloudy days, and especially during early winter, it's always either cloudy or dark outside. The sun disappearing from sight in october or november is the first sign of winter, and the sun finally shining agian in february is the first sign of spring.

How much power and for what can they produce? Knowing it will keep getting darker until December 21st really doesn't help my mood.

We just got our new solar panels properly connected at work. Sunrise at about 10.25 and sunset at 17.10, we won't get much out of them for a few months either. That's not even accounting for snow.
