Commentary

Who Is Ellen is the title of this storyline. Does it make any sense? It might!

Regardless, in case you forgot that Ellen has a bit of a connection to Elliot, here's Ellen being genuinely concerned that she is not adequately contributing to her chosen place for hanging out with friends.

...should anyone tell her she's already in a comic?

I like the not-quite-matching outfits. (Of course, in color they could look nothing alike.) Where the heck are they walking that has all those featureless, parallel paths? Why is Ellen doing that, "Look! Here are boobs!" pose?

The title "Who Is Ellen" made sense once I wondered whether there's a comic/anime that matches her interests, and immediately asked, "Wait, what ARE her interests?" The rest of the main eight have hobbies: Tedd - magic research Elliot - martial arts, review show Sarah - art (esp. drawing) Susan - movies, activism Grace - video games Justin - martial arts, comics, gaming Nanase - martial arts, academics And even the newbies: Ashley - fanfiction Diane - socialite, deduction But I'm drawing a blank on Ellen. Even her "teen detective" role seems to be "leave the detective work to Nanase, and jump in when things get physical".

I suspect that might be why this storyline actually. I remember her watching a lot of TV and I think she watches some anime too. But, yeah, she should definitely look into the manga they have, I think.

She seems physically oriented, so sports might be a good fit. But that might be too much like Elliot, and I think she tries to avoid acting like an Elliot clone, for obvious reasons. Second Life Ellen got into music, but that didn't carry over to, um, First Life. (Gah, I can't believe I got anime and manga mixed up in my previous post.)

I read Ellen as a bon vivant, someone who just loves life and new experiences. She seems to enjoy dabbling in many activities as opposed to having a few focused interests.

Oh, that's an oddly thick *railing* on an overpass. That makes sense. The lack of any support posts in the picture made it not obvious to me. (I wrote a whole essay installment a while back about how this comic in grayscale has far too little contrast. I think it might actually benefit from basically being pen-and-ink with spotted blacks, but no or almost no shading. The figures would be far more distinct.)

Carl Fink

I think sports would feel like cheating to supernaturally powerful Ellen. Even though magic will become more common.

Based on strip #2, it looks like my guess about what this arc would be about was TOTALLY off-base.
