I've read that initially, Nanami was only supposed to lose an arm rather than being killed off, but some exposure to pseudo-martyrdom/self-sacrifice in other works led Gege to change his mind out of interest. Really wish he hadn't died

bullshit. it would be realistic if Nanami retreated to be healed and then could come back to help others. What he did in the anime was a senseless suicide and it burdened Yuji even more. Aniwave OP/ED auto skip sucks ass and a lot of the times people have set it to skip too early to too late skipping some crucial scenes. Plus Aniwave got dogshit quality. Why people even watch anime on there? Torrent from Nyaa for the best quality. The difference is like going from 720p to real 1080p (Aniwave compression is actually that bad that their 1080p looks like 720p).
