I've been working on this for a little while, along with the rest of the HAPS board members, and we're finally ready to launch! We're all incredibly excited about this, and I can't wait to start accepting applications.  More information about why this initiative is necessary can be found on the website

Humans Against Poor Scholarship, in partnership with ASOR, is proud to announce a new grant program aimed at fostering diversity within the various fields of the study of the Ancient Near East, and Egyptology. (Priority will be given to students studying the ANE, but those studying other regions covered in the ASOR meetings can also apply)

Open to all Black undergraduate students in their junior or senior year who are considering further study, the Black Students Matter Initiative offers grants of $1,000 to help cover the costs of attending the annual meeting for either ASOR or ARCE. There are two grants available for ASOR attendance (one from HAPS funds, and one matched by ASOR), and one for ARCE attendance, with hopes to expand the initiative in the future.

In addition, thanks to a generous partnership with ASOR, one year’s conference registration, and a two-year student membership to ASOR will be awarded to a maximum of two students annually.

To help students navigate what can be a deeply daunting experience, successful applicants will also be paired with Ph.D. students or early career scholars who will act as a mentor during the conference. This grant not only provides financial aid for conference attendance, but gives Black students the opportunity to start forming professional networks that are so crucial for developing an academic career.

Applications will be accepted from December 1st-January 15th (ARCE attendees), and April 1st-May 14th (ASOR attendees). Comments and questions can be directed to hapsfund@gmail.com, and donations are being accepted at www.hapsfund.com/donate
