Chapter 1920: Shu Yu Is Satisfied

Shu Yu raised an eyebrow. "Seizing an opportunity?"

Jiang Fengshou scratched his nose. "I'll be honest, I did inquire about the Master's preferences and offered a small gift. But this is a legitimate method, isn't it? After I took over the grocery store, business kept improving. During the three years I worked there, the store expanded to include the adjacent one."

Lu Sanzhu raised his head, clucking his tongue disapprovingly. Offering gifts? Taking shortcuts? This wasn't the right way to do things; this person lacked integrity.

Lu Sanzhu never imagined that Shu Yu knew he had provided money several times in the Peach Blossom Forest, and each time, he included gifts.

Shu Yu, on the other hand, thought that Jiang Fengshou was quite clever. She had only asked four words, and he immediately understood what she wanted to know without needing additional clarification.

"About the grocery store owned by the Liu family... When did you leave, and how did you leave?"

Jiang Fengshou's fingers tightened slightly, and he whispered, "Last year, at the end of October. My father fell ill, and I couldn't take care of him. After discussing it with the Master, I decided to resign from my job."

Shu Yu's hand suddenly paused. October of last year happened to be during the turmoil when chenggu County was plagued by bandits.

She found it quite coincidental that Jiang Fengshou had left the grocery store right before the chaos in the city.

With a hint of something else in her words, she continued, "I recall that the Liu family's grocery store was also involved in the turmoil of the previous years, caught up in a case with the former Prefect Magistrate."

Jiang Fengshou nodded, his voice even quieter now. "Yes, everyone from the Liu family was sentenced to exile. Since I had previously worked there, the officials also interrogated me. After confirming that I had nothing to do with it, they released me."

Shu Yu smiled. "You're quite lucky."

Jiang Fengshou gave a dry laugh. "Well, my father fell ill, but fortunately, he's better now."

Shu Yu understood the situation clearly. Jiang Fengshou was clever; he had started as a street peddler, likely realized something, and promptly left the Liu family's business during the turmoil in Chenggu County.

Shu Yu's expression softened. Among the candidates she had interviewed these past two days, none had quit their previous jobs early like him. They had all lost their positions due to various reasons related to the chaos in the city.

"I understand your situation, but I need some more time to think it over. Please come back in two days for the final interview."

Jiang Fengshou was momentarily stunned but then nodded happily. "Of course, County Princess. I'll take my leave for now."

He was delighted, as if he had already been given the job, even though nothing was certain yet.

After he left, Lu Sanzhu shook his head with a solemn expression. "Look at him, all casual and smiling, but he's clearly shifty, with a fox-like appearance. He's nothing like me. Such a person, if made shopkeeper, will surely ruin your store sooner or later."

Shu Yu asked, "Doesn't he resemble Third Uncle?"

"Of course not. Listen to what he said earlier. He had already guessed that the main family would face difficulties, so he quit his job as a shopkeeper in advance. This is called 'each man for himself in times of crisis.' He will surely betray you in the future; he's not loyal."

Lu Sanzhu's mind was quick to grasp the situation. He hadn't understood it earlier, but now he realized that Shu Yu and Jiang Fengshou were playing a silent game.

"I think he's quite clever. The Liu family was deeply involved, and the outcome was beyond his control. It was wise to leave and protect himself and his family. Besides, he didn't betray the Liu family."

Shu Yu considered Jiang Fengshou's actions and saw them as a smart move. She appreciated his ability to recognize the situation and act accordingly.
