It's the Saturday Friday Rambles

As I said I would last week, I opened up requests (commissions) on my twitter, and deleted the post when I got enough to do, around 2-3 hours later. I just accepted all of them because they all seemed fine and easy enough. In hindsight, I should have just left it open for a set period of time and then selected the ones that I actually wanted to do, but at the time I was just excited to get requests at all and wanted to do all of them. Lesson learned for next time, I suppose. I am about 1/3 done with the queue, and after I finish I'll be working on Issue 3 of The Zine.

Lately I've been more and more concerned with finances, because I really have no idea what I'm doing with my "art business" and I'm not yet anywhere close to being able to pay all my bills every month. Like, it's actually pretty good money as a side gig, but as my primary source of income it's No Good. Anyway, I need to keep reminding myself that the point of this break isn't to make money, and I'm just trying out a bunch of different stuff and getting a lot of good reality checks and insight into how sustainable this really is. So when I finally go back to my own career I'll at least know that I tried.

While folding and stapling zines I got the good idea to watch movies while doing it so I'm not just thinking about how much I hate folding zines. I watched 1917, Margin Call, Ocean's Eleven, and Ocean's Twelve. In particular, 1917 was an interesting film to me, because the whole single take style gimmick made it feel more like a video game than a movie. Like traditionally you can use cuts and establishing shots to show time has passed, but with no cuts all time is real time. So basically all the different set pieces are taking place within a single square mile of each other because a person can't really walk that far within the running time of a movie. Anyway, as a movie, I thought it was interesting and well made, but there was a kind of a weird illogical dreamlike quality to it.

I also caught up with Mob Psycho 100 3 and Spy X Family, of course. I might ask around for good dubs so I can watch anime while folding zines too.

Lately I've been feeling the itch to make a game again. Of course, I have a billion ideas, but it's a different thing altogether to actually make something out of them. I think instead of wasting time doing commissions to make money (which doesn't matter because I'll be looking for jobs again soon anyway), I'll probably use that time to do game dev stuff. If I end up making a fun game that people like, maybe I can delay my comeback, and I'll actually have done some coding to keep my skills sharp too :)

Also, today I ate a burger.

Thanks for your support, as always!
