Take a look at this hypothetical cover for Bondsfungi:

The artist used the previous covers as references and the goal is to match styles. Please leave an anonymous vote below, but you're welcome to leave comments as well. I hope to work with one of these two artists, but will go back to the drawing board if necessary.

Hmm compasses are a thing 🤔🤔 but none of the MC have a compass...foreshadowing maybe

I like this one; my only thought or critique would be that it almost feels like it could have the substrate (the broken mask) be more infiltrated by the fungus (e.g. having a bit more outgrowth at the basal point of the stalks, or by having some rhizomal growth crossing through the cracks of the mask). Cool imagery though, no matter what.

I like this one a lot better the other one looks like getting blood from stone and that’s just kinda creepy

That's an interesting idea! I'd be concerned that it wouldn't look very clear at smaller sizes, but in terms of the large resolution image I agree it'd be an improvement.

Haha, perhaps I should have been clearer that the design of both covers was set by me. You'll find out about that next book!

I think the map looks much better in this one. I like the composition better too. The lighting isn't as dramatic but I think that might actually be a point in it's favour as well after looking at both for an extended time.

It looks good, though to my eyes the mushrooms look a little bit more cartoony than the rest. Maybe they need more detail, or maybe have only the caps glowing so the stalks can have more shading?

sarahlin

I can see that, and did worry about them looking a bit Super Mario. I'll think about if edits can easily improve this.

FWIW, I couldn't make out the composition at first glance: took me a sec to see the map as underneath what I could then see as a mask. So, maybe "readability"?

Giving it another glance, there's something off about the shadow and/or light source that my eyes won't accept. 🤷‍♂️
