> Rick traded several blows with him before he managed to kick his opponent's shin. chin, rather? Since you're describing him throwing punches, I'd expect a hit in the chin rather than in the shin. So, there's basically no points to be gained in heavyweights. Interesting. 4 points gained, and I suppose they'll do 2-3 matches... so, maybe 8 to 12 points total, vs the other classes that typically earn up anywhere from 24 to 30-something points when the fighter survives the round? Well, even with all of that, Granny is still in a good spot. The welterweight class is done, and alger heroes has no featherweights anymore. So, Granny has 3 points above Obsidian, and 1 entire match (so 8-12 points if Rick wins) above Alger. Seems completely doable, as long as Rick doesn't fuck that up...

I did actually mean shin in this case. The arm blows distracted enough for Rick to get in a surprise hit with his leg. All weight classes can in theory earn the same number of points, it's just that the heavyweights rarely fight long enough for anyone to get a decisive victory. Receiving 8-12 points is on the rarer high end. But yes, the lower classes can be essential, which gives the tournament some more strategy.

I like how the heavyweights are flashy, but ultimately kind of a stalemate. I think it is a really interesting dynamic.

Thanks! My thought was that no one at that level would go down easily, so in the scope of contained matches like this there'd be mostly stalemates. I hoped it would add an interesting dynamic to the tournament.

Definitely! I think that’s insightful, and I haven’t seen it done before in a book or a tournament setting like this. So to me it adds to the atmosphere and realism of what’s happening.

I like it. Granny has a lot riding on Rick.
