My friends, as a special present for the holidays, I'd like to present this structured music theory masterclass today!

Since music theory is the #1 topic on the wishlist this month, I thought it would be a great idea to put all the most important concepts so far into one course-style video that starts with beginner topics and ends with advanced topics :)

Here's a compressed and downloadable video of the full course: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1h46nQEuQinQ3HMQZpg38X79dHISwQtms/view?usp=share_link

And a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m5mdlfz2lza03ft/%23254%20-%20Music%20Theory%20Masterclass%20%28Compressed%20Video%29.mp4?dl=0

This video looks great but the audio is very distorted

Was a bad download, sounds great now and thanks for the very clear lessons!

worked through chapter 1: note location and chapter 2: Intervals. I enjoy your videos and it has been helpful in my guitar progress. Working through Economy picking course and alternate picking masterclass as well.

So quick questions, first off, i don't know much about Music theory, what are triads ? why are they shown and what should i do with them ? i don't want to learn them by heart not understanding what i do yknow ^^

Anonymous

Triads are 3 note chords. Prob the most important thing about them is they are a prerequisite for more advanced topics, but in a simple sense they are the "essence" of most other chords (e.g. Cm7 is a minor triad with root C, plus a minor 7th notes).

Thank you so much for this

the links are not working :( can you fix it?

bernth

Hey there, we just checked and all links are still online and work. Which ones are you having problems with? The individual shortened links just lead to other Patreon videos, where you will find the full lesson on each topic with a download link of the files. Hope that helps Team Bernth

Thank you Bernth!

The video is private

What is the difference between this and #214 Guitar theory course?

Anonymous

I like how you did this. It makes sense to take prior tutorials and combine them into a single course. The only potential problem I see is chapters 1, 3, and 4 all link to video #121. Is that what you intended? Thanks for all you do, and have a wonderful holiday.

Anonymous

Nice, that's exactly what I was looking for. Well how do you guys go about learning all the notes on the fretboard? I'm currently in Drop C and wondering if I should learn the notes in Standard or Drop Tunings. Thanks!

bernth

Yes, these are all taken from that episode! Have an awesome day!

bernth

Hey friends, it looks like this video was set to private in the first hours - now it should work for everyone :) Thanks for your patience and happy holidays 🤘

Ed

Hi Bernth! What do I do when I get stuck on a certain metronome speed? Like maybe 105? Do I slow down a bit? Or keep on that speed until I get it? Or change to a new exercise?

Hi Ed M, Take a look at Step 3 on https://www.patreon.com/posts/167-extreme-in-5-50839230

Ed

Thanks! I’ll check it out. Edit: I watched it but I don’t get it. Eli5 please? Since walking don’t work, you have to run? Meaning it’s a whole new mechanic/technique to master? Or i have to up my game at that same bpm where i’ve been stuck for a week? Eli5 pls pls pls

Ed M, Bernth says that most people don't learn how to run by walking a little bit faster daily. Most people, usually in early childhood, immediately go from walking to trying to run. When you first try to run, it may not be super fast, and it may not be very elegant. Most little kids even fall easily when they try to run. In the case of learning how to play fast, sometimes trying to slowly increment BPM by BPM hinders the learning process. There is a different "feel" to playing something at 50 BPM compared to 100 BPM compared to 150 BPM. Just like your body feels very different when you walk compared to running. Sometimes, you must start doing the faster BPM and be okay with it being very sloppy. It's the only way to start getting used to the "feel" of playing that particular thing fast. For whatever it's worth, I have only been able to make the "jump" to faster BPMs by setting the metronome to the higher speed and then doing it over and over and over again. I usually do 5 minutes of play and a 1-minute break. I then repeat that over and over again for 45-60 minutes a day. After a couple of days, sometimes a couple of weeks, everything finally starts working. But, it is VERY messy and sloppy for a while before I get to that point. Everyone is different, though. So what works for me may or may not work for you. Hope that helps. 🤘

Ed

Ah that makes sense. Thank you ! I’m gonna try that.
