My friends, let's do something different to end this great month :) Since the guitar progress video I posted a couple of weeks ago went viral (https://youtu.be/Vo2r5x7nTck), I wanted to take a closer look at my terrible technique in the early years.

Of course, I don't just want to make fun of young me, I also want to show you which exercises I would have suggested and what my biggest mistakes were :) I hope that this helps you on your journey, here are the exercises I talked about in the video:

The easy finger exercise(classic spider workout): https://www.patreon.com/posts/210-6-guitar-are-61618769

The economy of motion exercise: https://www.patreon.com/posts/182-this-finger-53895697

Hand synchronization workout: https://www.patreon.com/posts/191-best-5-min-56222239

The basic picking exercise: https://www.patreon.com/posts/215-5-big-all-63355014

P.S.: Looks like I scratched my camera lens when I brought it on tour :( Sorry for the annoying dot in the footage, it's not your screen! Hope I can fix it soon!

Nice video. Thx Bernth

Fortunately this nightmare player made it to a professional musician 🙂 Nice pretense Bernd to move the spotlight back to some basic exercises as a learn control 👌

Nice video! I still make some of those mistakes, like the fingers position. I don't know if it is because I have small fingers, but I struggle to have my hand in the right position and press the strings with my fingertips. When I try to, my wrist hurts a lot... I guess I have to keep on trying...

I must say, the "progress jump" from 13 to 14 is still impressive, even knowing that you played a lot and worked on solos. Funnily, I started playing with 14 years with a guitar teacher, but I think I reached that level after maybe 5-7 years of practicing songs I liked. My playing really improved when I joined a band at 21 and I guess that was the time when I was roughly at the level you were at 14. So: Kudos to you for actually working on hard stuff and improving so much during your teenage years. I tried the same but my awful technique (I also used your banana-grip, but used thumb, index and middle finger to clamp the pick for alternate picking) limited me much earlier and I could not break through that bareer for many years. While it is somewhat discouraging to see, how much better I could have been if either I figured out these things earlier or had a teacher that actually did more than playing Green Day and powerchords, I am still happy and thankful to at least have found this community now :-) Maybe, one day...

Hi Bernth Just suddenly got an idea of a fun vid.. The vid is you playing the same passage maybe a fast passage but using many kinds of pick, thick and thin small and large.. And the take away we all can observe how it affects your playing and your tone and how much the type of pick matters.. just an idea.. thnx for your work Bernth..

Great idea, thank you for that! I can suggest it on the next voting for sure :)

I've been looking for this lesson for so long. This same wall of bad technique habits have kept me on and off the guitar for the past few years. I subscribed a couple of weeks ago and I'm already doing noticable progress. It's hell fixing what has been learned and practiced wrong for so long but these instructions and exercises help a lot. Great content, man! Thanks! :)
