To start this month with something very special, I'd like to show you some exercises in my personal routine at the moment, and why I especially recommend them to self-taught guitarists!

Here are your practice files for this video (exercise video play-alongs, backing tracks, tabs, guitar pro files): https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1SFUEDikAWfzgdTyXrQTm_-YDJDLCyrBY?usp=sharing

I especially recommend the tricky but awesome alternate picking/sweeping/theory workout (exercise #3) - this one has tons of benefits for your technique and fretboard visualization skills :) You can change the tempo to your liking with the guitar pro file, make sure to start slow, and work your way up the BPM ladder!

P.S.: Here's a Dropbox link in case Google Drive doesn't work for you: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/2r9axq2wa2542fi/AAAkcig9xyx6MV-dyTbjmXbxa?dl=0

Great tips and an awesome horse!

Thank you Bernth !

Maybe you could do a follow up video on the difference between the diminished triad which fits over the locrian mode, and the 4 note diminished scale that only fits over the harmonic minor scales 2nd, 4th, 6th and 7th modes.

Hi Bernth, I'd really love to extend my repertoire with some Funk guitar stuff (as shown here in the vid) and I recently checked out some Funk music on Spotify, but I struggle so hard with finding material to play. Most Funk songs I find tabs for are really old or have that "gospel-style" sound or only use guitars sparingly in the background, but I'd like to go for more modern Funk songs with the main focus on guitar. Do you have any sources or starting point on how to start with such music?

Anonymous

I hope its not bad form to post this but Chris Buono is a good modern funk player. I

I enjoyed playing Long Train Runnin' when I studied at the conservatory - it's also not exactly a Rock/Metal song but not that bad for trying out some patterns based around the main riff :)

Hey Bernth! Do you have past lessons about the upstroke and downstroke escapes? Thanks!

I'm excited for what is coming next week, but Tyler, check out #200. I found it really interesting on the "what" and "why"... the "how" at really fast speeds I'm still trying to figure out.

Hello, in exercise 3 , I don't understand why the first arpeggio is called Bdim when there is no B played ? Thank you for your help

Guilty as charged, gotta get rid of the old habits :D About the horse... well it's more like a pony, maybe a bit cursed. The Nazgul could ride with that one in Lords of the Ring :')

Anonymous

how fast do you end up playing exercise 1 bernth?

bernth

This one is not so much about speed, if you get it clean at 120-130BPM you are already doing really great :)

Anonymous

Bernth I can play it at 100 decent The120 is killer but I can play it if I put it to 75% speed Been working hard out on the up slant

Anonymous

bernth i can play block 1 at 110 bpm but its sloppy . its coming along well been working on this one from 40 bpm going up 10s , 110 is my push tempo 40 to 80 is comfortable . my wrist just needs to catch up

I saw this too. I believe that arpeggio should be shifted down a half step, so that the second note lands on that B. Instead of 12 to 15, it should start 11 to 14. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

yes, as written, it's a Adim arpeggio ( A C Eb Gb). the rest of exercise 3 is correct. Likely a simple copy/paste error.
