I literally just had all the items arrive yesterday for my first home studio setup (Presonus studio 24c usb interface, Shure sm57 mic, presonus monitors etc)! I am a total beginner at recording myself play. This is going to be an amazing course to learn how to properly use it all as I currently have no clue. I’m sure taking them out of the box will be a great first start lol. Thank you Bernth!

good content! I enjoyed, i'll take a look to the course, sure i could learn things!! Btw, i would not recommend using presets as they come to record something proffesional, but for demo level i feel that it's ok I use the focusrite 2i2 and Reaper, my preferred Drum machines are GGD and Ugritone's vst drums, for bass i preffer to use a real one, most plugins feel too robotic for me Viel Glück mit dem Tisch bauen :D

Great video as always Bernth! What kind of computer would you suggest for recording, i.e., desktop vs. laptop, Windows vs. Apple, specs? This is my first foray into recording - thanks again!

I have an old saffire USB going to reaper. Revv with two notes going directly in. Definitely need to find a good mastering program. Not sure if I'm happy with my monitors

Man, I was literally just getting to the point with the guitar where I was thinking “I’d love to have a home studio for a great workplace to practice, improve, and record what I’m working on”. Bernth, I've used AmpliTube from IK Multimedia, along with Cakewalk. Have you tried either of those? If so, how do they compare to what you use?

Thanks for asking! I use a Windows PC that was set up for me, it's really nothing too special and I want to make an upgrade soon :) My laptop can also handle most projects, maybe it's even faster - I guess it depends on the size of the projects you want to work on, I mostly just do demos/pre-productions or basic mixes for the YouTube videos!

Thanks for asking Scott! I did use it in the past (an old version I guess), I'd have to test a never one to compare it - if it works for you and you're happy with the sound, I'm sure it does the job :)

Great video! I gave up recording my stuff in the computer and used only garageband, because it' is pure "plug & play". But after seing this video, I think I'm going to dive into the Home Studio Basics Course and explore more options concerned to home recordings. Thanks Bernth!

Hi Antonio, I startet Homerecording about a week ago and in my experience it´s not rocket since. To keep the costs low I bought studio Headphones via Ebay ( 50% off) and the focusrite Scarlett 2i2 as Bernth mentioned. Great stuff. I use the DAW Protools first. Came with the Scarlett and as I can see the workflow is pretty the same as in Cubase Bernth is using. The hints and hacks are working roughly the same way (midi instrument click etc). The biggest problem I have are the growing demands as i delve deeper into this. That´s a matter of money but it´s a really impressive and exiting journey I´m on now. So keep going and get the most out of it! Greetings

Hi, thanks for the good introduction in home recording, I just started with GarageBand to record my first steps in learning guitar, but as a drummer it’s really cool to Programm drums, as I don’t need a million mics for record the acc. Set 😄 Still got a question: where the hell dis you get this awesome red bull fridge in this hard case optic? I’m trying to find it for weeks now but was nothing 😅

Hi guys! I'm struggling with my fractal fm3 and my audio interface to record a nice distorted guitar sound. I have a great dry rhythm sound on my fm3. However, once recorded it sounds like I used lots of reverb. And if I double track it L and R, it's even worse...

Any chance your DAW might have Reverb dialed up on either the FX (send/return) bus of the guitar tracks, or on the Master Bus (final output)? Also; not familiar with the FM3 (I use Helix), but you might try turning OFF all Reverb blocks just to verify it’s not coming from the FM3. Finally; just to be complete; might want to re-check that no Reverb FX are being added by your monitor or PC environment (i.e. outside your DAW). (Also, in passing; I find that Monitor Speaker playback generally sounds “wetter” / Reverb-heavy than when listening through headphones, because of the added room acoustics, etc..,, so I need to back off the FX a bit for better mix balance.) Hope this helps. Good luck !

Thanks for your comment! No reverb on the fm3, of course. I'll check on my DAW...sure there's nothing on my guitar track. Maybe on the master...

Hello i have a little question, not basically fitting this topic but anyway. i fell that my sound is very scretchy in the moment when the plektrum attacks the string. i use a max grip jazz 3 - and i am very very comfortable with it. comes this from my amp settings? i am sure that this is not coming from my playing. i would be thankful for helping answers.

Timo - it could be the pick. The Jazz 3 is a thick pick, and if it's slightly 'sliding' on those bass strings as you pick them then you would get a 'scratching' sound - similar to a pick slide. This depends on how angled the pick is, and if it's striking more on the side of the pick, away from the point. Do you hear the same sound when picking the higher strings? You could record a sample of you playing when connected to the interface and listen to the raw capture to also rule out the amp.

The guys at Toontrack have certainly got an awesome array of plugins! I've got most of the basic equipment that will allow me to start recording my practice sessions - which I plan to do once I've got some of my technique under control.

Thanks so much for taking the time to share this helpful feedback Chris, I'm sure this will help Timo out! :) The pick sliding/scratching movement is a great comparison. I love to use the Jazz III picks as well Timo, works great for me personally - tomorrow's video is all about string transitions and picking angles, I think this might help as well!

Great course, but if you want the toontrack stuff with some extra packages (mixing, metal…) you have to pay for everything extra. So if I choose the things I want I’m at 1.232€ . Thank you toontrack, that’s too expensive. That’s advertising, sorry for the bad response . I bought ez mix ii, and there’s nothing in to use…

Awesome lesson! Quick question though, what type of computer are you using? I’ve always used a pc and am thinking of moving to Mac. I hear positives and negatives for both types. Is it personal preference or is there really a difference?

I personally always used PC and have no experience with the Mac :) I have a very simple setup and computer and I'm also looking for an upgrade, hope I can share more on this soon next year! I especially need faster render times with Premiere/After Effects but there are no issues with Cubase and recording with 'standard' specs so far :)

Thanks for the reply! Not sure what direction I want to go. Software and hardware outdate so fast these days it’s tough to keep up. I’ll have to keep researching based off of what I plan to use it for. Thanks again!

Jeremiah, I'f you have the extra cash to spend and really want to use Logic as DAW you should go with a Mac but i'f the answer is "No" I think you should go with a PC. I'f you want even more bang for the buck maybe someone you know know's how to build a computer from scratch and some tech-store's can build the computer you want from your own specs! I bought the best iMac from 2019, 5K Retina 27" screen, brand new (Not imac Pro, just best iMac) and for the money I spent (42.000kr / 4613USD / 4084 EURO ) it wasn't really worth it. Sure it look's awesome, great screen and I can do about anything with it but the loading time is killing me sometimes. I've heard that some have this problem and some don't but keep that in mind that for a computer so expensive you shouldn't have something to complain about at all and my Mac will not get any younger and when sometime has passed eventually it will be even more outdated and I can't do anything to upgrade it. You can always upgrade a PC. You can build a PC for the same price inkl. a really good screen that will kick an iMac's ass to the moon and back for the same price, this is coming from a person that have been a Mac-user since 2014. I have no idea where to get started in Cubase. I received it along with the purchase of my Helix Floor. I also received Helix Native as a part of the promotion. I have a PreSonus interface and monitors. So, I'm ready to go (for the most part) but just need help with the what's what of Cubase.

So after watching the initial video is Cubase 10 still optimal or should I use the Cubase 12? *Edit - So it turns out that Cubase happens to be too pricey for me at the moment, as well as the EZMix plugin, I can use Reaper for now on the DAW, but are there any free or cheaper plugins I can use for my tone, mixing, mastering, and drums? At least until I can afford the better stuff :)*

Great vid. Use Reaper on Linux (Av Linux), no lag issues! And I have the ModDuo/ModDuo X for "plug ins", awesome little machines. This was inspiring!
