Nah I dont think Ketil was beating her before now. As we have seen in the past he was actually a nicer guy than most slave owners. I think between him losing the girl he loved in his youth and the trauma of having his sons kill the kings men and knowing the king is coming for him messed him up. Plus he always would always give lavish gifts to the king too and so he trusted that he would be left alone but Canute plotted against him out of greed so his trust was broken there too. Now he finds out she tried to escape and its too much for him, hes lost it. Just my take anyways

Poor Ketil and Arnheid. . Arnheid's life is punished because of two bad decisions. 1. Gardar decides to fight for prosperity. 2. Arnheid decides to take the chance to escape with Gardar. If she had chosen Ketil and told him about the pregnancy, he probably would have fled with her to start over and she could have had a fresh start with her second child. . Ketil's life is completely turned upside down because of Canute's goal to create a utopia. He comes home, is haunted by death and is almost on the verge of a mental breakdown and seeks attention from the only person he trusts. His family is a mess. His first son a cold-blooded warrior, his second son a hopeless case and a cold wife (probably a political/arranged marriage) who could not give him any warmth in all these years. He then learns that his second love is trying to abandon him to flee with another man at the worst possible time. This was the final stroke to turn him from a lifelong kind pacifist into "Iron Fist Ketil". After all these events, he makes the terrible decision to take out his anger on Arnheid. I wonder how the story would have gone if she had told Ketil her story much earlier. She knows that Ketil developed feelings for her and she knows he was a kind hearted man before all of this. . What I would like to know is how this relationship started in the first place. Was it love at first sight for Ketil or did he slowly fall in love with her over time because she played the perfect obedient slave wife for him.

I think with all the trauma and afraid of losing everything, Ketil was pushed to the edge. First the king, his son and all the things happening afterwards. Ketil is a scary man.. And the voice actress for Arnheid really was the goat of this episode. That hurt so much.

Btw this was the first time Ketil was violent. Which all comes full circle for his character. As in the beginning of the season, he couldn’t believe his eldest son was violent and brutal but turns out he’s his father’s son after all. This was also foreshadowed with the storm episode. She chose to dive straight into the storm (trying to save her husband) and of course if you head into a storm there is dangerous consequences for that.

i dont think Thortill was abusive before now. Arnheid made it seem the farm was a perfect place for her to raise her son and hell he hesitated when it came to punishing other slaves from stealing from him. Thortill is just absolutely broken and has just turned for the worst. he didnt have to be nice to Thorfinn and Einar and has a reputation of being a push over when it comes to punishment
