SPOILER WARNING for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse from 21:30 - 26:32.

The Dad Crew sits down to talk about the latest episode including how everyone gets in their heads about the combat episodes, how Beth walked backwards into Anthony's plan, and the heartbreaking irony of Terry Jr. dying in front of Scary when she doesn't even know who he is.

Plus, they talk about the new Spider-Verse movie, the issues with multiverse movies in general, and then get into some surprisingly emotional territory talking about moments in media that help express feelings you couldn't pinpoint before seeing them.

Arielle

Critical Role actually IS pre-recorded these days, so they do have to wait, but they get to see the Twitch chat like y'all get to witness us during live listens.

Racing for Tips

Oh my god, Taylor picking up the bullet and it having runes that enchant it to kill JFK but then JFK is scratched out and Terry is written on it hahaha

Alex

Any updates on the murder mystery campaign? It feels like we’ve heard about it for awhile.

Justthingstbh

I love Anthony calling Nick, Nicky

Justthingstbh

Can't believe I managed to evade spiderverse spoilers until skipping through the episode and hearing Matt drop the Bombshell on me

Luisa

Who else cried listening to that last LOTR quote? Had me full on heaving for air

Chell-glados@hotmail.com

My biggest issue with the spider-verse movie is that I don't know if I believe all those other spideys would be okay with people dying. Spidey doesn't let people die, he fights forever to stop it. It's a little odd that Miles, apparently, is the only one not Okay with the canon events. I understand that Miguel caused billions of deaths when he fucked up that world but, idk, I still think Spidey would *try*.

James Lewis

Could someone tell me what time to skip to to avoid Spiderverse spoilers?

Baggin_Black42

I’m surprised they didn’t mention or have seen midnight gospel on Netflix

Tom Stift

They were talking about the theme of into the spider-verse and how they couldn’t quite pin it down. I think the theme is supposed to be about moving from childhood into the adult world and the effect it has on not just the kids but the parents as well. How many of us went into the adult world found the people “like us” (aka the spider society) and then had to find out that our people don’t necessarily have our best interests at heart. I found a lot of parallels between joining the film industry, finding people that I live in this industry, and also figuring out that this industry sucks in a lot of aspects and that there are a lot of bad people here but also a lot of good as well. This theme runs through both Gwen and Miles but also their parents having to watch their kids grow up. It’s best summed up when Mike’s mom says she’s just scared they won’t accept and support him like they will. I doubt they’ll read this but that’s my general take.

Goliathspider22

I think of one way to look at it is that Miguel (and possibly Jessica) are the ones who recruited this spider society. This possibly isn’t every spider person in the multiverses. So they hand picked who got in and at what time period they were “qualified” to join. Like they picked spider people who, at a point in their life, have experienced their canon events and have comes to term with their eventuality. Just a theory.

Rachel McVicar

Will’s speech about the moment in Star Wars put all of my thoughts about it into words! I agree that it’s my favorite moment in the whole saga.

Chell-glados@hotmail.com

I like that idea tbh. The multiverse is infinite and, yeah, like 10,000 spideys do seem a lot but that's only 10,000 out of an infinite amount. It's a lot but it's then not just Miles who's not okay with it. I also like the idea that they're kinda kept in the dark and only recruited after the canon event. Idk, have to see how the sequel resolves the idea but I am a touch concerned. Hope they land it satisfyingly.

Pablo Acosta

I was listening to S1 again, ep34… Grant’s nickname is “Shooter”. Fucking brilliant

Alice takes R.Q. & wins

What's the name of that animation that Will's going on abt at the end of the talk?

Katherine

I actually thought the last 2 episodes were sooo hilarious. The base jumping argument was made for my specific humor because it killed me.

Evan Cordero

I love Wart Watch but I was totally ready for one last Borderlands gag. But I guess they're saving it for gamer comedian

Lilyannifer

I was walking home from work while listening to the episode. I actually, with my whole human mouth, said "nooo!" when Terry was shot. To the great confusion of an elderly woman walking along near me. I just sort of smiled weakly and gestured to my headphones, and she took the opportunity to cross the street at the next intersection.

Wolfersnic

The build-up in this episode from Scary/Terry's poem to Terry Jr. finally getting a hug and then the twist with Grant was amazing. I can't wait to see where the story goes!

Arlo

Sondheim is just so amazing at describing complex human emotions. Being Alive from Company specifically gets me every time. Absolutely, viscerally human.

Lazaretto

There was no spoiler warning for Across the Spider-Verse 😭

Jordanasaurus Lamb

This just shows how good of a written Anthony is. Like that ending broke my heart.

Ram33

Love the spoiler warning from Matt at the end for some shitty anime no one will ever see, but no qualms about ruining Spider-verse

bbsincere

i patiently will wait for freddie and matt to play "bread and fred" or a similar game like "it takes two" or "unravel two"

Kellie Zufelt

omg imagine my surprise when i’m at work and i get a spoiler for spiderverse wtf

Harrison Lee

Will you guys be uploading your rooster teeth expo session?

Bad Fiction

Love questions like that last one. Always my favorite thing when they all gush about their favorite media. Or the flip side when they rant about stuff like that Adam Driver 65 movie

Jess Houwen

"Ah I can do my dishes." ...as I'm working while listening to this.

Kyle Barnes

Not sure if they have plans too but RTX panels usually do not get saved. Doesn’t mean they couldn’t set something up though

Kyle Barnes

I’m so disappointed I missed the comedy show tickets. They are always the first to go

Joshua Turner

Thank you Freddie! Baraka + Samsara are must watch pieces of visual art!

Lexi

I know! I've been avoiding spoilers until I can see the movie but I didn't notice the description so I got spoiled 😭😭

Michaela

Oh wow, I didn't expect to get to the end there, and have the description of how that girl put all a thousand little bits of her loved ones into her animation make me cry

Darryl Holiday II

Beef. I think that's a recent show had a lot of moments that hit hard. I really hope it doesn't get a second season. I feel that way when something is so perfect. Less truly is more sometimes.

Taryn Chatfield

Tell me Gamer Comedian and the DnDads are coming to Dragon Con this year, I need more Gamer Comedian in my life

Riley Wesson

The one about the animation club? That’s “Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken”

Riley Wesson

I think a moment that always gets me in media is in Haikyu (both the manga and anime) when things speed up so much in the last point of the Inarizaki match and Hinata slows the pace down with a simple, high set. Such a beautiful summation of the results of hard work and focusing on the basics and how those sorts of things pay off in the long run.

mari

the moment for me is in arcane when vi leaves powder behind when she goes to rescue vander. powders destructive sadness and anger in that scene... i have never related that hard to a fictional character. they do such a good job of portraying her sadness, and how easily she could spiral if she had no support. amazing

Úlfdís

I dont know the animae will was describing but just that description had me weeping

tiamat

I’m so happy Beth mentioned Sunday in the Park with George! I just recently found that musical being a 20 something and it really hits home every time I continue to listen/watch ❤️

Tuneable

I think what worked for me in that middle section of Across the Spiderverse with the canon events and how Miles responds is the conversation of if trauma is needed for growth or change. Like Peter B. says something responding to Miles about Uncle Ben’s death like “We wouldn’t be who we are without that,” or something like that and I remember thinking in my head that “does it have to be that way?” and sorta meditating on the idea that trauma or bad events in one’s life need to be a catalyst for growth. They can be but, I feel like somewhat anti humanist that people can’t do good things without some trauma igniting it and to a wider extent that things are the ways that they are with the spider canon and cant be changed. That’s why I really admire how Miles rejects that status quo and along with Hobie’s push to escape who embodies that resistance to the status quo decides to do his own thing. I mean I might be off base here and it might just be another coming of age story about a kid who has to settle and realize that he can’t have everything but man it would be so nice if they somehow let Miles have his cake and eat it too. I would feel like it would fall into that narrative of him being an anomaly outside of that system that Miguel is trying to keep him in.

Frankenjam

I wanted to hear what Beth had to say about multiverse movies being the best when they don't touch the multiverse. Everyone cut her off :(

Patrick Morris

Just saying revivify requires 300gp worth of diamonds that the spell consumes. So Anthony you don't need to come up with a reason why they can't resurrect him it's just clear that normal isn't walking around with diamonds in his pocket. Most resurrection spells have a material cost which is what makes it harder to just spam those spells.

Adam Morley

Stop the res by having an item freeze time for exactly one minute

Lokasenna

My theory regarding Matt's point about Spider-Verse is that Miguel isn't telling the complete truth about canon events and it could be a lot of his own self-pity driving the focus of the "spider society". I haven't thought too deeply about it though. Also if Normal resurrects Terry what if Grant just shoots him again, immediately

Lokasenna

Also Will, that's also my most favourite scene in all of Star Wars :") ☀️☀️

Kendal Swanson

My ceiling is also leaking due to my upstairs neighbors shitty plumbing! How relatable!

Jonathan Goddard

I literally paused the secret sleepover society streaming Bread & Fred to listen to this xD

Maddie Byrne

Beth with the pull from Sunday in the Park with George has made me incredibly emotional at this time

Ohmanhoman

I did wonder why the poem rhymed.

Angela Shrader

I NOTICED, BETH. Lol as a fellow non rhymer, it was very obvious to me.

Chillycheesedogs

I WAS WONDERING WHY THE POEM RHYMED!!!

Banchew

My favorite teen talk episode, I teared up a couple times

Carlos

Had my gripes about Across the multiverse, definitely not as cohesive as the first film. I think its funny though that one of Matt's gripes is that the films message is 'Don't listen to adults, even if they're way more knowledgeable than you.' Isn't this fundamentally the same theme of this season of Daddies? Especially excemplified in Matt's character Link!

Karter Michaels

The thing with the two Miles is that prowler Miles was more than likely what the Miles we followed was supposed to end up like. It's not a, our Miles fucked over this world" moment it's a "this is what you were supposed to be" moment. It's two characters who had their destinies swapped now seeing what they were supposed to be.

Karter Michaels

Also the movie is not about not listening to adults it's very clearly about not following along with fate and making your own story rather than just following the "story". Also there is a clear issue with Miguel's logic that we the audience see that the other characters except Gwen, don't see. I think Gwen can see that only the spiderman in their universe can change the future, even if they do gain knowledge of said future. It's why Gwen's universe is still standing despite her father stepping down from Captain.

Josiah Muskrat

How are we not talking about the fact that Willie didn’t have the collars on- Barry did.

MalixCrash

Hey! Tip for Anthony as a sort of writer of this type of thing, If you hadn't been able to use the prophecy in this episode I think my best advice would have been to save it for when Scary finally manages to reconcile with her father it would have definitely been a severe emotional gut punch for the character in the audience to see them sort of embrace each other fully for the first time and then immediately rip it away violently never to be seen again, and by then everybody would have definitely forgotten about it. Granted, maybe that might not work with the direction you're headed, but it's probably what my first choice would have been.

Maria M

The book “The Rest of Us Just Live Here” by Patrick Ness has one of those moments. The main character has OCD and narrates how he goes from washing his hands to being stuck in a compulsive behaviour loop, and it stopped me dead in my tracks because it hit home somehow. Despite his recognition of what’s going on he feels so powerless.

streetdreams

Another classic but it's Undertale's "Despite everything, it's still you." for me.

Gimblegorp

Fuck yeah, someone else knows Legend of Hei! Love the movie, has some of the best fight scenes in animation.

ShannyKrik

I LOVE when yall argue about dumb shit. you are a part of my life nearly every day! Fighting my depression & bipolar swings with your banter. Similar to family, it feels real when you insist on your own way & figure out a compromise. It feels real for your characters too. I have no perspective on whats a good episode because its YOUR art. It would be like criticizing a tree for its uneven branches. People like it or don't. Thanks for being daring & vulnerable. And sharing your art/hearts with us!

ShannyKrik

I wouldnt assume thats a mistake. Could be! Or willie might have gotten them from Barry, made some of his own.

Rindo

Maybe the best teen talk ever? I could hear them talk about inspiring media for many hours tbh

Brandon

On the being seen in media, I love Lake Mungo for that exact reason. It just gets me every time

KeeV

I thought the theme for spiderverse was actually crystal clear. It's about breaking with the expectations that others have for you, finding and fighting for your own way and wants. Almost every character follows it and the ones that don't are obviously set up to go down that route in the second movie.

BlankPapers

Time traveling’s a bitch

Quantum OFZENTRIX

Just to point put, saying that it doesn't make sense that miles doesn't listen to people who seem to know better and trying to fix things his own way is a bit hypocritical when this season is entirely teens thinking they know better than their parent s and the consequences therein.

Daisy Terry

I doubt this is what you were talking about, but If I Didn't Have You by Tim Minchin is a very touching yet funny song about how choosing to be with someone can be much more romantic that fate or destiny

Spinnaker

Could also be that the magic in the collars prevents resurrection

Nathan

I dunno abt y'all but I used to cut out warts with knives and I've never had them regrow.

Michael Madsen

I know it’s a meme but Borderlands 2’s ending where Jack has his breakdown about being a hero actually did effect me. Helped me understand that people believe differently than I do, and has helped me now get people who have such different perspectives from myself

Allastra

so uh, Critical Role hasn't been live since covid XD They pre-record now. Some of the cast is in the chat when episodes air now.

Just Drago Games YT

Such a deep teen talk. Btw that Borderlands 2 ending 🥹🫡

MaxKCool

Apples and oranges. Just because it makes sense for this show doesn't mean it makes sense for that film.

Erin

You have me all crying. I had to pause and still cried when I came back. You are lovely people.

Tinyhumanbrain76

Rip Terry. — Bro died a sad life! But also he kinda lived the best he could. He deserved to have killed Willy.

Tinyhumanbrain76

I mean it was 90% arguing abt base jumping & than terry getting shot but thats dungeons and daddies and we love it 😂😂😂 (clarification: i don’t think this was a bad ep at all)

Chris

My read was she was saying that 'multiverse movies' are best when they are about possibilities of branches/choices in your life, not about a literal multiverse like MCU stuff.

PoodleMan24

I cry every time I watch ‘A Silent Voice’, like I don’t know how to describe it but I just feel a connection to the characters and I watch it to cry occasionally

welcometojen

Can’t believe we lost Terry Jr and Wart Watch so close together.

Matt M.

The gag with the milk in "Mind Game" has to be a 1:1 homage to the pants stitch scene in Hudsucker Proxy, right?
