Matt I've never met anyone else who depises A Separate Peace as much as I do. That book literally made me hate reading. Thank you for speaking my truth

Lauren

I’m cannot believe you made me remember that I read A Separate Pease I hated that book and we spent SOOOO LONG analyzing it freshman year

Olive Flores

right before my drive to pick up my husband from work. thanks for the driving radio!!

scumbag

Perfect timing for a flight in the morning!

Joe Raoul

Is Taylor or is Normal the confidant of the chariot arcana? Plz confirm with a "For real!?" in character

Clark Kent

Ooohhh man

Owen Bardsley

Did anyone every read the sequel to hatchet? It was called brians winter and it was like an extension of the first book.

Anonymous

Beth! I love you more now! I've never known anyone else that's read veronika decides to die! I loved that book in high school (and still do) and i often think about the king whose people went mad from the well being poisoned and the only way for him to remain king was to poison himself as well. Or that the function of a tie is solely to provide relief at the end of the day :)

Anonymous

I did. It was a "what if" scenario where brian hadn't been rescued and had to endure the winter. I didn't care for it as much as the original but it does show that he may have continued to survive if he hadn't been found.

The book Beth describes kinda sounds like the movie what happened to Monday , I haven’t read the book tho are they similar?

Caribou beats starbies ass up and down the block for breakfast. Disrespectful

5 seconds in and I am THRILLED to hear the brueggers bagels shoutout. Tucson for the win! We love you Beth 💛

You gotta watch "Booksmart" for fantastic coming of age movies. Came out 2019, the premise is two girls who sacraficed their social life to ensure they got into good colleges discover that everyone else did well at school too and try and find out where the big grad party is going down to make a last high school memory. Really funny, kinda like superbad without the questionable character motivations.

Anonymous

I'd love listening to the uncut versions! 😍

In college my phone died while i was sleeping so i woke up 30 mins after a Physics exam started. I ran to the exam room, and just answered rushed through the test. I did fine, but i always triple check my alarm is set and my phone isnt dead

Beth unlocked a core memory for me when she mentioned the Among the Hidden series

Octavio

Then some mighty delicious Bagels. None near Downtown Phoenix, whomp whomp whomp.

Jake Coltrane

Just to set the record straight, there IS a movie version of Hatchet :) They changed the name, but it’s the exact same plot and characters. It’s called A Cry in the Wild (1990), and it is legitimately terrible and hilarious. 10/10 recommend 😜😜😜 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Cry_in_the_Wild

Vivi

Touching Spirit Bear has forever imprinted itself in my mind.

Jake Coltrane

Some of you may be asking, “Jake, how do you know this?” And the answer is simple! I went to public school in North Carolina, where they will ALWAYS show the class a movie instead of reading a book… Did I read Tuck Everlasting? No, but I’m very familiar with the widely panned 2002 Alexis Bledel vehicle of the same name… How about Secret Garden? Nope, but Maggie Smith was legitimately wonderful in the 1993 release… Great Gatsby? Nah man, but the 1974 version was the OG of screwing up a film adaptation… It’s amazing that I ever learned how to read and write…

Grayson

A Separate Peace is such a shit book. 100% with you on that one.

hajilE anatnoF

Talking dads and talking teens is so good. Just a podcast with this cast and crew in general makes me smile

Jay

I get to teach Hatchet every year. It’s always my students’ favorite book!

Chronicles of Prydian, the official name of the series that Taran Wanderer is from, I love. Protagonist starts as a genuinely immature kid at the beginning, but seeming him grow up is so organic and loving and satisfying

Anonymous

Aaaaand Beth just blew my mind with her description of Hatchet. A survival story for sensitive men… I recently listened to Gary Paulsen’s Fresh Air interview and I can’t think of a better way to describe him… RIP

Anonymous

facts. Harchet, did have a movie called "A cry in the wild".

Jake Coltrane

Ah! Perhaps I've met a fellow public school attendee whose teacher decided to blow 1hr22min of class time watching this movie?? Have I indeed met a kindred spirit here??

Ryan

I just bought the among them hidden books series!

Ryan

Kenzie Sigel

Among the Hidden yesss Beth!

Cam

I know how you feel Freddie, ;-; I kind of liked the 2007 Golden Compass movie, the actors were good, it was fairly close to the book, I wish they made the sequels :/

From Hatchet, I still remember one line: "I hope the tornado hit the moose"

Jesus I was like 10 when the Bridge to Terabithia movie came out and no one fucking knew what was coming. An entire family blind-sided and tearing up

Anonymous

I’ve read the whole Giver series, it’s amazing. The books seem to not be connected until you get to the last book. It’s mind blowing

Alex Wade

Beth~ Among the Hidden took place in China XD Also, Matt~ was your fancy school version of Sadie Hawkins called Tolo? Ours was called that so I'm curious

Anonymous

I absolutely shit you not I have been trying to think of the title Among the Hidden for MONTHS after talking about "YA books we had to read" at one of my jobs. They are a bit younger than me and my husband is a but older than me and I felt absolutely insane. Call me Chris Carrabba because my ass is vindicated.

Gwynn

I work 3 doors down from a brueggers and went to brueggers most every day during my senior year of high school. Love those bagels

Anonymous

Abode is the best wordle word

Anonymous

A separate peace was required reading for me in high school and it's truly awful, deserves 100% of the disrespect Matt gives it.

patchy

While listening to the beginning about y'all being in college and missing exams, my college senior ready to graduate slacker ass kept thinking "damn that sucks glad that isnt me". After finishing the episode i check my school email for the first time this week.... and i have a midterm due in 5 hours..... that i totally thought was next week.... Also shoutout to Hatchet! That was one of my favorite books and I have never forgotten about it

Charlotte Ivy

Anonymous

I've started my wordle with women every day this month because they come first

Jake

Hatchet has a movie and it is the one of the WORST/BEST movies I have ever seen in my life. Think along the lines of the Star Wars life day special. I URGE y’all to go watch the hatchet movie.

Jake

The hatchet movie is called A Cry in The Wild.

Kelsey Reyer

Oh man haven't heard about Among the Hidden in a hot minute. Loved it being the 3rd kid. Also I'm pretty sure Hatchet did have a movie with a different title.

Kait O’Mara

Everything feels so planned now

Dragon rider

I have a theory about the doodler what if it's disguised as the soccer team they just pop up our if nowhere and always speak in unison

Adrienne Rushing

I was drunk my first year of college, met a lot of cool people, some I call family, took a class called "alcohol and criminal justice" where we basically learned how to make beer, and now I have a $43,000 piece of fancy paper. And now I want to do graphic design...FML

Anonymous

Oh man the Golden Compass. Me too Freddie, me too...

Anonymous

Freddie talks about the Hatchet scene where he has to dive for supplies but doesn’t mention the half-decomposed pilot’s head😬 THAT’S what stuck with me. I don’t remember that part being in the movie but I didn’t find any of the movie particularly memorable.

gargoyleb

"Someone left a SENTIENT BOOGER in the lobby!" NOT a sentence I thought I'd EVER hear!

Sabrina

Not them conspiring when Anthony is away 💀

Wolf Note

Confirming we have brugers bagels in nc. Never been in. Always heard good things tho!

Wolf Note

I LOVE HATCHET AND THE SERIES

Adrien

Never been to college, can say tho I use to “ditch” in the sense of I would take my sweet time getting lunch food cause for some reason in Utah they allow students to just leave campus and trust they will come back. I didnt have a car at the time so i would just walk up to wendy’s or any other place nearby and just take my sweet time coming back to school. I needed to take the bus to and from school so like going home def wasnt an option. However If I had a car in high school I would definitely just go home and not go back and lie to my mom “oh school ended early” even tho my school will call to report my absences all the time lmao

Adrien

Easy A and 13 going on 30 for some reason the 2 coming of age movies I always think about first anytime i think if the topic of coming of age movies, dont know why but ye

Dnderza

Hachet has a movie though?
