Hey folks!

Starting next month (July), Patreon is going to comply with new laws passed in US states and various countries around the world which require sales taxes to be charged on some pledges (and only on the portions of your pledge considered "taxable").

This is going to be different depending on where you are, but the key takeaways are that:

  • We expect the impact to be fairly minimal to your pledge amount
  • We're working with Patreon to properly classify the pledges to minimize impact

Whether you're charged depends on your location and what's considered "taxable." Because our tiers have a pretty wide range of benefits, not all those benefits will be taxable everywhere, and sometimes only a portion of your pledge will be taxed (taxes collected are paid to local governments).

Patreon should be sending you folks emails if you're going to be affected (if they haven't already). If you have any questions they've put together a help center article here, and if you still have questions, feel free to reach out to their customer support.

As always, thank you all for your continued support!

Time for some "Financing" next month.

Does this retroactively charge people who've paid for the year? Or only when people are charged going forward?

I don't have certain information, but I thought I would offer that I doubt it's logistically possible to charge retroactively. Just considering how many different jurisdictions there are to account for in terms of the legality of retroactive taxes. I know that if my business calculates certain payroll taxes incorrectly we can't charge folks after the fact so we just make up the difference.

Happy to support regardless.
