Live event at Housman's Bookshop.

George Hoare hosts Dan Evans (author of A Nation of Shopkeepers: The Unstoppable Rise of the Petite Bourgeoisie) and Bungacast regular Catherline Liu (author of Virtue Hoarders: The Case against the Professional Managerial Class) in a conversation about the middle class.

How should we conceptualise the middle class, how has it come to dominate politics, and what should be done about it?

So many thanks for this. Catherine Dan and George thanks for your work and willingness to do your work out loud. Maybe these are the kinds of analyses and insights that sad melancholic activists are looking for in their desperate anxiety about “saving the left”.

Surface Envy

Thank you for bringing Dan Evans' book to my attention. His and Ben Studebaker's 'The Way is Shut' are two of the most clear-eyed perspectives on the state of Western democracy and class relations for the post-'long 2016' that I've come across. 'The End of the End of History' isn't bad either 😅
