Soylent green is a reference to the movie Soylent Green where the big plot twist (though the trailer kinda gave it away, is that soylent green is made from people.

The joke about Melllvar being a child is a reference to the episode The Squire of Gothos in which they encounter an alien with godlike powers who at the end of the episode is revealed to be just a child. He is comparable to the Q, and one of the novels even says he's from the Q. Also the mention of the Nichelle Nichols and William Shatner kiss is pretty interesting as it was the first televised kiss between a black and white person and was insanely controversial for the time, the studio actually received death threats for having aired it.
