March update! (Patreon)

[ and the beat goes on ]

Hello gang a very late March update but that just means we’ve got lots to show you guys, right? RIGHT?? Ahaa erm well about that! We are just past halfway on Midnight Maids. This is us sticking to our monthly full episode production schedule and so far its not going too bard, we’re not 100% on target but our hearts are in the right place. In terms of the channel and the studio, there’s been some interestingly spooky developments so stay tuned and I’ll dish the tea.

So I want you guys to picture this, our most ambitious episode has just completed, that’s 2 years of work and 30,000+USD spent. We’ve checked and triple checked, go it to where it needs to be and finally uploaded! First day it starts to run a little slow on the view count but no problem, we’ve had things run slow before, cut to a week later. We now have the worst performing video we have produced in 4 years. The view count deadlocked at 70,000, now we’re not one for conspiracy theories but we’re pretty sure that the video got shadow banned. The reason? Most likely because cam rips a guy’s eye out and we didn’t censor it!! The only issue we have is we didn’t get any sort of warning when we uploaded as unlisted, if we did, we would have censored and reuploaded! So in a nutshell 2 years and 30,000USD worth of work shelved by the YouTube algorithm, not kino lads not kino at all…

[ what now? ]

Well kids, in a different time this kind of blow would really rock our confidence, but we’re kind of past the whole view count thing as long as we know we tried our best and produced the best possible piece of work we could. We think we hit that with episode two, so regardless we’re happy we just hoped more got to see the thing  BUT ANYWAYS it’s all good, we just dusted ourselves off and moved onto the next job, such is the life of an independent anime studio on YouTube.

With over half of the layout complete, things are really starting to shape up on this project! Much like the development of pepechan, we tried to work with a specific show as a reference point. This helps dictate our art direction and background paint choices and what not. So far, it’s in that weird place where until I get everything comped up in after effects I can’t 100% call that we’ve nailed the aesthetic but all signs show good! As always it’s refreshing to get our hands into an another new IP and world and see what we can make of it. I do however have the urge to revisit some of our older work like Discord Girls. Thank you everyone for all your support throughout this year! Although YouTube delt us a pretty shitty hand the massive silver lining was you guys. We achieved the highest number of sales from an episode this year and the patreon hit an all-time high. You guys keep animation alive!
