My dad watched these movies when they first came out in theaters here in the states and he once told me that episode IV was just called Star Wars. It wasn't until the next movie did it have an episode number and he remembers everyone being shocked it was called episode V. Then a year after that came out the first movie was re-released in the theaters this time called Star Wars Episode IV - A New Hope.

I recommend watching the cartoon "Star Wars: Clone Wars" between Episode II and Episode III. It answers a few questions that may arise in Episode III. Attention: There are two series, I mean the first one from 2003 (the "cartoonish" one).
