So I made a Patron video yesterday where I said that I was going to read the whole Channel Awesome document relating to #changethechannel and come to a decision after that. I have been part of CA since mid-2014, for those unaware, when they brought on a bunch of new producers.

So I read the document: for those unsure of what I'm talking about, here's the link, and here's the condensed version.

And, having now read the whole thing, I have parted ways with CA as of today. So they'll be removing my videos from the site completely in the next couple of days per my request.

This is going to be a public post, just in case anyone who's not a Patron...you know, cares, but this isn't about me, and nor should it be. This is about the people who have been talking about #changethechannel and their experiences with Channel Awesome/That Guy With The Glasses.

Thanks for all of your comments, and your support. I appreciate all of you more than I can say. Godspeed, little doodles.

I didn't know you were apart of Channel Awesome.

JillBearup

That is...pretty common actually! They weren’t particularly brilliant at promoting their independent producers.

Shame on them because you're awesome. I wish I owned Channel Awesome because I would make some changes.

Will you keep the "It's Channel Awesome Day" bit in front of the SYL 100? Because it would be a shame to lose that.

JillBearup

Definitely. I mean, I think it would be a bit odd to deny that I was ever on there, you know? And I worked really hard on that thing! :D

" For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" Yeah, I'm pretty sure this is the right decision.

Back when I would regularly visit the site it was so poorly designed that everyone else was buried under drop down menus, granted I didn't like to stray far from my NC comfort zone but I really didn't see what content creators got out of the deal. In fact the poor design and generally meh production values (at least compared to what so many creators are doing today) made me have a hard time wrapping my head around the fact this was a company that actually made money and not just Doug and his online friends

That's not to bash yours or anyone's production values, that home made feel is somtimes nice...I just feel like Doug never really stepped up his game even when he had the experiences and resources to do so, (compared to Lindsay) granted I haven't watched him since 2015 (I stayed a around a bit post demo reel)

It’s a fair comment. I did get a fairly large initial traffic boost from them, but the general design of the site meant that people increasingly just went to my YouTube page. Which was fine by me but wasn’t great for community on CA!

glad to hear you are leaving, but i would have followed you regardless. also, since i introduced people to you via channel awesome, i've been re-directing them to your youtube channel instead.

And Adieu to Channel Awesome. If only the Management were better people...

Good for you. I must say it is rather sad that this happened considering I do like the Nostalgia Critics work.

Why did you join CA in the first place? Would the brand help you get a significant number of more views? This isn't meant to be an accusatory question. I am genuinely interested in knowing the goal or thought process you had when you made the decision to join CA. What would CA be/do ideally?

JillBearup

It’s pretty sad all round. And honestly almost all of this could have been avoided. Mostly I feel sorry for the producers who really depended on CA for views.

JillBearup

The main goal was “more views and subscribers” which they certainly provided! Both as a pretty big initial boost in viewing numbers and subscribers when I first appeared on the site, and then as a reliable few hundred to few thousand views on the first day a video went up, which YouTubes algorithm likes. I also got to know a bunch of people on the site better, and that was nice. I wasn’t expecting much more than that, really! By the time I joined it was clear that aggregation sites were becoming less relevant, but while I didn’t get the kind of boost that the early producers got, I was (and still am) a small creator so it was still pretty significant!

After reading the entire public document you linked to, it is nice to hear that CA did some good for you.

I think I found you via Channel Awesome in 2014, but I honestly thought you had left years ago, probably because I was just following your channel and hadn't seen them post about you or share your videos in years.

JillBearup

:D Well I'm glad you found me anyways! Hello, welcome! And this is probably why I'm getting no blowback about being on CA/leaving CA/whatevering CA...nobody thought I was there in the first place. It's my mad ninja skills, don't you know.
