yall... I can't believe you hit me with not one but TWO emotional ass albums two weekends in a row! I am rewarding myself with Caroline Polachek next week FOR MEEE! but yeah... anyways, this album was a horror film. Religious trauma, daddy issues, and cannibalism manifested into a slow-core songwriting album with mixed influences of classic southern rock and late 90's grudge. Haunting, mysterious, and sometimes downright gruesome lyricism. Vocally impressive as well through outro moments where you can hear Hayden's voice just releasing their personal pain with non-syllabic melodies. Production does end up lacking a bit though. It's drenched in a ton of reverb and as much as that is for lyrical enhancement I feel like it muddies the clarity of her narrative at multiple points. I might be a little slow but some of the lyrics are also very metaphorical and require a bit of insight. I felt like after most songs I found myself looking to Genius for a description of what the tune was "really" about. From a story perspective a modern-day, southern tragedy, I wouldn't wish this life on my worst enemy. An absolute gutwrenching ending that oddly reminds me of a specific scene in Attack on Titan.

All factors leading up to say that this feels more like a novel or an experience than an album that is meant to go back and listen to for your favorite songs. Not quite my tempo and I find myself enjoying the songs more in concept than in performance. It's a strong concept album that achieves its intent in a fresh and interesting way. Not my personal type of music I frequent but impressive nonetheless. 7.9/10

if you enjoy these written out breakdowns/reviews im gonna be posting a lot more on my AOTY account moving forward so feel free to follow me on there

ETHELLL MY BEST GIRL I STREAM THIS ALBUM SO OFTEN

Rebecca

Wow I can’t believe you’re doing Ethel today and Caroline next week we are so blessed 🥰

giannadesimone

do '1989' first then 'Speak Now' for Taylor reactions ! I can't wait to see your reaction to both #kingtroy

JayJay

Absolutely love me some great storytelling but I agree, this was slightly traumatising and I don't think I can get through this again anytime soon... maybe "American teenager" here or there cause that's a bop. BUT TROY! 3 long streams + 2 new videos this week and now you're casually dropping these written reviews?? We're being FED. Thank you!🫡

Allison Smith

Yesssssss thank you Troy!!!!

Emily Isom

Firstly, it's actually crazy that there are over 10 THOUSAND of us on here now! But you deserve it. Sharing your love and appreciation for music of all genre's is what sets you apart from most music reviewers! Second, when it comes to Taylor and where to start, I would recommend starting with Speak Now (The Purple Dress Album), since I personally see it as her first "transition" album, from country to a more pop-like sound (although it's still country). 1989 is such a hugely important part of Taylors discography, that I think knowing what she came from would give you a better understanding!

Katherine Forquer

Would love to hear his opinion on the production because I feel in LOVE with the lyrics but the production through me for a little bit of a loop and I want his opinion so much!!

emma 🌷

loved this breakdown! i’m so stoked for caroline polachek next week :))

Emma Leath

AHH! so awesome to see you react to this!! I adore this album but totally understand it not being your taste. I definitely see it as more of like a story/experience than an album I return to for the bops. But the storytelling is incredible. One of the few albums I can really only describe as such a visceral experience.

Dance Of bro

I absolutely loved this reaction, it was my first time listening as well and I probably will listen again later in the week. And for the Taylor album, I think you should do debut. I know everyone is saying 1989 and speak now but I don’t think the county Taylor listening experience would be the same for you without starting with the roots first and being able to see how she progresses from there. Keep up the great work Troy.

mickey

i love this album! i’d probably give it about a 8 ish as well, probably like 8 1/2 ! ALSO i’d love to have you get into speak now next i think you’d enjoy it since you enjoyed if this was a movie :)

Franziska Lai

OH MY GOD IVE BEEN SECRETLY MANIFESTING FOR THIS ONE

Lauren Flack

has he done fearless or am i blind and cant find it? or has troy just missed that boat of reactions

Hillary Davison

Speak Now is such a chaotic album and one of my personal faces - 100% self-written as well.

Erin Rumsey

Yay, I’m so happy you listened to this!! The storytelling is so compelling and there’s so many great moments in it. Tbh I listen to it all the time but I can definitely see how it really isn’t for everyone.

Erica

All Time Low just released a new album. You should check it out, so much middle school nostalgia.

y4wwn games

i love this album so much, your videos are amazing as well i love just watching and crocheting, living my old lady dream

Megi Atabagi

might know exactly which aot scene you're talking about and, yes

Bobhog

speak now would be really fun!!! but also wouldn't mind waiting for the re-release (could be two videos though.....you could really drag out the taylor content - we never tire). 1989 is masterful though. but like continuing the hating j. mayor with speak now could be fun - cut backs to 3am version.

Hannah M

I think you should wait on speak now ironically enough lol , its all but confirmed to be the next re-record (see Bejeweled MV) so if you wanted to do ANY more taylor for those really wanting it, id do 1989 or debut. or just wait it all out, i *personally* dont mind since we know re-records are coming and id rather you stream/react the ones she owns+vault than give those MEN more money ;) ps. love ethel cain so i was so excited for your reaction. really intense stuff

Kalijah Ashburn

Brooooo you're on Kim Petras insta!!!!

Candyce P

Speak Now is definitely next! I'm totally down for you reacting to those soon and then getting another reaction to the vault tracks when she releases her versions later :D

Grace Mower

Does anyone have an updated discord link?

B Bailey

ethel cain is my trans southern icon!

abby doherty

I think speak now would be so interesting for you to hear especially because it’s sooo different than what you’ve been recently listening to with reputation and lover, and 1989 has the most big hits that you’ve heard, blank space, style, bad blood, shake it off, etc so it wouldn’t be entirely new, you might have a more fun time throwing it allll the way back to speak now. It’s super rock and country and pop in all the best ways

emma

GIVE US SPEAK NOW I BEG.

emma

taylor is refusing to release speak now tv so give it to us instead🤗

Shannon Henderson

if you enjoy concept albums i would recommend We Don't Have Each Other by Aaron West and The Roaring Twenties

g

THIS WAS SO FUN TO WATCH and i can't wait for you to react to Desire, I Want To Turn Into You!! you should also do Pang if you haven't already

Liz Marie

fairly new patron here, hello! been watching you on youtube though for over a year. While I found you because of your Taylor reactions it's not solely why I'm here. I would say do 1989 next, then you can work your way back through her first three albums.

Sammi

Troy I haven’t been a Patreon for very long, but I do have to say I absolutely love the content you been putting out! You’re doing great and thank you for doing the album review :D

saniya keshwani

Froeroe

I read something about this album is the last part of a trilogy which is gonna be made of Preacher’s mother, Preacher’s wife and Preacher’s daughter. Also just a fact, Ethel’s fave song of the album is Televangelism and its all a piano impro

S. L.

Speak Now!!! But anything you do will be wonderful 🫶

Brooke

I think speak now would be good for you to start with, 1989 is the pop bible at the end of the day but I think starting with speak now, you'll be able to see her growth as an artist more since it comes before Red. I'd say react to the OG speak now and do the vault tracks later when the re-record is out. <3

Kayla Duran

Did we ever get a Fearless TV reaction?

taylor hopper

i’ve been waiting for this haha

Lula Frey

listening to caroline polacheck so i can have the upper hand on you troy, another wonderful stream though! thank you for sharing!!

Carmen Riggs

Happy 10K Patreon members!! Honestly I’m a new subscriber, I started watching for the Taylor content, and stayed for everything else. It’s exciting to be able to enjoy music in the way it was intended to be presented: sitting down and listening to the whole album, laughing, crying, appreciating. Not just hearing it in radio clips over multiple months. I think it shows the artistic expression and creativity more. Great video!

Brittany Gingerich

Troy PLEASE review You’re Welcome by A Day To Remember or some Mike Stud!

Hannah Powell

Ik you're an All Time Low fan, would love to hear you react to Scene Queen's new song '18+' which is about the gross predatory behaviour of *some* bands on the Warped tour, and the general culture of SA, with implied references to the allegations specifically against ATL. It's a very classic emo-style bop with 'bimbocore' (ie metal barbie) elements, and it's a lot of fun

Teaghan Doyle

Respectfully can we have some more harry styles please xx

Natacha

Speak Now (Purple dress album) and its World Tour!! Its one of her best!

SapphicSkn

The way i was literally about to ask if you could cover this album and alas i open patreon and you gave it to me

SPEAK NOWWWWW

Anthony Moffatt

This was my favorite album of 2022.

Grace

When you went to google “snuff film” and the entire chat just went “oh no” I lost it that was so funny

Danielle Olson

I came for the Taylor content and stayed for the #emotionalcontent. I had never heard of Ethel Cain and now I'm like, sad and also in a bad mood. This was heavy. Brilliant but heavy. The level of creativity is overwhelming. Troy's reactions just made this a crazy experience.

amanduh

joined today to watch this uncut after finding it on youtube. PD is the most beautiful album i’ve ever fucking heard, i’m so glad you gave it a shot!! i was working the first time i listened…..you can imagine how that went 😅 super excited to delve into your other videos :)

dylan cowell

36:55 saying it sounds 'urethral' made me SCREAM. 'ethereal' yes, 'urethral' is where you pee💀

SpaceDandy

I became a patreon after watching this on YouTube, I really adore this album and your commentary on it is really interesting

binchiana

This is an album where the experience gets richer with each subsequent listen and I love that - all the musical references between the tracks and the foreshadowing in the lyrics - STUNNING

Arin

I've watched this on YouTube three times over the last few months because I love this album so much, but with Troy's insights alongside it, I feel like I'm listening to it with a friend. realised today that I could extend this by hunting down the stream here! thanks Mr Haze for keeping me company whilst I cry <3

Olivia Sasse

every couple of months i watch this stream in its entirety and it puts me back in the mindset of experiencing this album for the first time, nothing has ever made me feel like this album did so thank u for these 2 hours of insanity

julian

over a year late but fun fact, televangelism was completely improvised!

Alex Gilbert

This and the HSM videos are why I paid for Patreon
