The final version in this series of Unseen Scenes!

Hope you enjoy it :)

(I used 'they' as a pronoun for the Detective as it's neutral, so you can imagine whatever gender your MC actually is or NB)

At the Facility. Nearing Midnight.

---

The image of Nate’s eyes, wide with fear and shining with tears, makes Adam’s heart strangle in his chest.

He shoves himself off of his bed and paces the room hard enough it’s a surprise it doesn’t leave dents in the floor.

With a groan, he rubs a hand over his short hair as though trying to push the memory of Nate and the bloodied Detective in the warehouse out of his mind.

It doesn’t work.

Instead, his ribs seem to dig into his lungs like daggers as he stomps back and forth in the confined space of his room, his toes starting to go numb from the force of each step.

A growl escapes him as he almost rips the door from the hinges and heads out into the hallway.

Adam has no idea where he’s going, just as long as it’s not the cage of his room. He needs space. Space enough to give his thoughts room to disappear and stop haunting him.

It’s true he had been worried for the Detective when they’d been so weak after the fight with Murphy. They’d saved them all. And Adam couldn’t even thank them.

But just how worried he’d been is what scares him the most.

Another rumble of annoyance escapes him, scaring a couple of agents into giving him a wide berth as they pass by.

His march comes to a quick halt as he swings around the corner of a hallway and comes across a couple of familiar figures he would rather not meet in that moment.

Rebecca sags against the glass partition looking into the medical room, and Nate stands close by with a reassuring hand on the woman’s frail shoulder.

“They’ll be all right, Rebecca,” Nate says in a voice so soothing that it almost helps ease the tension which knots Adam’s own body. “They’re your child. They have your strength.”

“At the moment, I have none,” Rebecca admits through a ragged breath.

Nate tugs Rebecca closer. “Then you’re welcome to mine until you get yours back.”

But even as Nate says those words, Adam can see the strain of worry that pinches Nate’s brows together. Nate fears for the Detective’s life.

In the same way and for the same reason Adam does.

And the realisation once again sends a strike of guilt-ridden pain to cut across Adam’s chest.

He eases away from the medical room with a sigh, not noticing Nate turn to watch him go with a confused frown.

The love triangle route is one of the most painful things I've ever read (and I mean this in a good way). Poor Adam, it hurts so much!
