Hello everyone!

I am back from the dead. I won't beat around the bush and I'll put it simply: in my life, I've always struggled with having proper work ethic. I am naturally lazy, I give in to distractions, I am an incorrigible procrastinator, the whole package.

I love my work, I really do. I am passionate about speedrunning, understanding new concepts and breaking them down for everyone to learn. But despite all that, I can still fall prey to my habits of ditching work for the lowest effort option, procrastinating, failing to meet deadlines and expectations, and so on.

This is what's been happening to me in the past two months. While I have progressed on the video, I have been doing so at a snail's pace: sometimes just one hour per day, sometimes 3 or 4, sometimes not at all. I gave up my time tracking spreadsheet, I played way too much time-wasting video games and spent way too much time refreshing social media.

That came with a feeling of dread of looking at my production schedule and posting Patreon updates. So today I'm trying to snap out of it and face the truth: I lost a solid month but I can still make this year a good one overall. I had been on a roll for quite some time with the last few parts of the ABC series, the Minecraft and the Super Mario World videos. I can steer the ship back!

(Side note: this seems to happen to me a lot during February-May, I'm not sure why. Usually it lasts about 2-4 weeks and it comes with having to write and record a new video.)

Progress

I am slowly but surely working my way through the video. Today, I finished Whomp's Fortress and I got into Shifting Sand Land. LBLJ, Bowser in the Dark World and Cannonless were some of the more complex stuff in the run to break down, and that's all done now.

I don't want to come up with a release date just yet, but it should be the first half of June.

Showing the insanity of Suigi's run when compared to the rest of the field.

A quick rundown of the route taken for this category.

The Lakitu trigger.

Showing a sense of scale with a few visuals. First, the 10 units wide sliver of the railing where you can stand without triggering Lakitu's dialogue, with Mario for comparison, and also a real-time view of Mario's speed as he runs and jumps around.

How ledge grabbing through ceilings works.

How the BLJ works.

The floor doesn't match the visuals in the black room behind the door.

Mario having to slow down to go up the "stairs".

A ghost comparison of standing in the middle of the trapdoor vs the side. The middle is faster because the opening trapdoor carries Mario down with it.

This wallkick up to the 7th red coin in BitDW is rather interesting.

Ghost comparison to show where Suigi lost time.

Did you know? Cannonless is possible thanks to a gap in the wall.

Explaining the music glitch.

Already down to 6% of attempts after only BitDW and Whomp's Fortress.

That's it! I apologize for my lack of updates for so long. I have talked about it on Discord, but it's really all because of my failure to be productive and not wanting to face the reality of it. I've been doing a lot better in the past couple of weeks and I can only hope that I will keep getting out of this hole going forward.

See you next week!

Your struggles with motivation are a lot like mine, and they sound a lot like typical symptoms of ADHD. Have you ever considered getting an evaluation?

I really don't think I have ADHD. I don't have trouble focusing on one task or the other issues associated with ADHD, I simply have poor life habits and low self control.

ADHD doesn't necessarily prevent you from ever focusing on a task. If the task is properly engaging, someone with ADHD can focus on it for hours at a time (in my case, to the point where I forget to eat). Not going to nag about it, just throwing that out there. I hope you can find a strategy that works for you. Good luck!

What’s affecting your productivity? Is it the writing, coding, video editing, voice recording, having to make big/small decisions, not being motivated, not liking working on something at all? Identifying what it is exactly can help It’s also possibly fine of this is the way you work. Forcing yourself to work may lead to lesser quality output.

tbh those problems are really relatable to me and it's weirdly reassuring to see someone i respect have similar troubles with getting stuff done.

I have trouble starting a task, and I have a video game addiction that comes and goes. Nowadays I got hooked on like 6 games at once, and I intentionally have not bought TotK yet because of that. Usually once I get started on work I can get a decent amount of progress in, but I often start at like 3 pm and then after dinner I'm useless.
