Thanks for all your effort at making fun things for me to watch 😀

See you at the party, RLM

Oh, there was a movie BEFORE the one with Colin Farrell? You guys teach me so much! Honestly, last year, I played Total Recall with a close friend that never saw it before. When it was about halfway through he said, "OMG this is one of the greatest movies I've ever seen!" I said, "Damn right."

Anonymous

Great. But when is the next Plinkett?

Anonymous

It's Handsome Mike and his best friend, Rich 'that fucker' Evans!

Anonymous

Was it a schizoid embolism? Yep. The director says it on the original DVD commentary. That's why it fades to white at the end instead of black (they say that too). It's nice that you can view it as real and a complete mental collapse. But yeah, it's all his delusion. It's pretty clearly set up that way.

Anonymous

Thank you for your work.

Anonymous

The director might say it, but since it's not actually written into the movie then it's completely open to interpretation. Which makes it a better movie

Tony C

Looking forward to checking this out thanks fellas!

Thanks for the video, RLM. It's funny you mentioned how we tolerate violence in the US. I think I may have mentioned this before, but.. I live in South Korea and Total Recall (Arnie's version) was on basic cable here. The scene at the bar the woman with three breasts was shown in full. But as soon as the violence starts the knife wound shot was blurred along with footage of people smoking. So as an American I was just surprised by what they censored.

My late father would watch this all the time. I have strong memories of me as a kid walking into our living room and seeing that scene of Arnold in that weird woman disguise and being scared shitless cuz I didn’t understand what was going on. Now that I’m an adult I have much appreciation for this film and enjoy watching it. Great re:View guys 👍🏼

Verhoeven is great at pretending to give the audience one kind of movie, but in reality tricking them into watching something entirely else... "RoboCop" seems like a dumb sci-fi-action movie, but it is also a scathing satire of 80s capitalist culture. "Total Recall" seems to be on the surface another dumb Schwarzenegger-action flick, but it's also a rather deep exploration about WHAT is identity and if the reality you perceive is real or not. "Starship Troopers" seems to be an overblown, dumb blockbuster about the military fighting giant alien insects, but it rather slyly draws a nightmarish picture of what a truly fascist society would look like. And "Basic Instinct" seems to be all about Sharon Stone's pussy, when it is in fact ALSO about her tits and her ass...

Peter Varga

I actually really liked Benedetta too! there's a lot more going on in there than just "lesbian nuns".

This video warmed my heart. Thank you guys.

I think I finally have to give "Elle" a watch, I have it here on DVD...

I think it's clear that Paul Verhoeven (the genius) was using this story as a vehicle for his own commentary on Hollywood movies once you see the ending, which is very reminiscent of classical Hollywood.

I'm an adult/grown-up, one and a half years older than Rich Evans (calculated from his entry on IMDb), and I have some love for Gorilla Interrupted, especially because of its youthful energy and its silliness. But also because I think the writing is really good, and even Garrett's performance is okay from the scene on, where he talks with Ray in the kitchen about his anger. I once said that most of pop culture is BS to me, and not worth fighting for. What I didn't know at that time was that pop culture, by its definition, is not just media and culture that develops around media, like all those Star Wars products, dancing Darth Vader's, and Disney's quasi-religious Star Wars events. That's the BS I don't think is worth fighting for. And if Star Wars is dead, so be it. What I really like is watching Red Letter Media videos, and see elements like the vignettes around the shots from the discussion, which look better than the ones in the Enemy Mine re:View.

"I Loved It Even More" = my feelings for RedLetterMedia, exactly.

They dealt with that plot hole in the 2012 version by having Kate Beckinsale's Lori act in defiance of Cohaagen's order to let Douglas Quaid live so he could lead them to the rebels. She's just trying to kill him the whole time, going against the plan.

DonMac

I'm surprised Mike and Rich didn't mention what an awesome character Kuato was. He had such gravitas in his scenes that the buildup to him was completely paid off. He was believable as a revolutionary leader despite his physical form. "Quaid... Quaid... Start the Reactor. Free Mars!"

Dan B

"Somewhere out there is a guy who has read it, and he's yelling at the screen" Damn, did I leave my webcam on again?

Anonymous

I’m surprised they forgot to mention that the Dr. Edgemar actor was also Kolrami in TNG.

This is the one of greatest scenes and greatest commentary tracks ever https://youtu.be/Eq_pVzyhXHw

Dreyfus would have been perfect, because Quaid is supposed to be a boring average guy.

andrew

Isn’t the “red pill” actor the Zakdorn from Peak Performance? I just recognize the voice.

Anonymous

Haha Andrew Freund from MySpace, with freund meaning friend in German, they couldn't even get a real review from a nobody, had to fake a MySpace review

andrew

Aaron Rodgers has Low T.

Rich is right about Martian air pressure. The biggest hole in The Martian is the storm that traps Matt Damon on the planet and causes the others to evacuate. Atmospheric density on Mars is about 1% of Earth so you don't have those kinds of storms there. Of course, that storm is the catalyst for the entire film so......

I had similar feelings. My late dad and would love to watch this film together when I was a little girl. I always forgot the lady’s head was fake and my dad would always laugh at my shock when Arnie appeared. This was a lovely trip down memory lane. I also never ever forgot the woman with the three boobs.

Anonymous

No, you can't breathe on Mars. God, I love you guys.

Best fucking £4 I spend in a month. From Scotland you cunts.

PIG

As a life long American I think it’s safe to say: we got all our priorities fucked up. Totally cool with violence and blood… but god forbid you show a nipple.

Really loved this episode! I read Philip K. Dick as a teen but haven't really thought about him or the adaptations in 20 years. (I seem to remember being really insulted how Blade Runner took about 5% of the plot of the book and ignored the rest.)

Anonymous

Gul Dukat wasn’t the only Cardassian leader in the movie. Mel Johnson, the guy who played Benny, was also Legate Broca, the Dominion puppet they put in after Damar started the insurrection.

Anonymous

Rich is looking quite svelte! Keep it up!

David S

Great discussion! I thought about watching the 2012 version before watching this but I couldn’t wait. Keep up the good work!

DonMac

Philip K. Dick saw some rough edited footage of "Blade Runner" before he died (which was only a few months before its release) in a special screening. He was so impressed by what he saw that he asked to see the footage again, and so they reloaded the film and showed it to him again.

I guess the only reason I still question whether or not it's real is that a lot of scenes don't have Quaid in them and therefore aren't from his perspective, which his dream/fantasy/mental breakdown would be. But you could easily argue that because it's his dream, Quaid is omniscient despite not being omnipresent, or that we're just being provided context by the filmmaker. The scenes with the prosthetic heads are so impressively repulsive I have to look away every time. Escalator scene, hilarious. Bulging eyes and nose, I'm gonna throw up. Speaking of, Mike, you said you were 10 when you told that story on the Robocop commentary so I don't know what to believe anymore.

Kurt

Saw a 70mm screening of this (yay!) with Michael Ironside in attendance (more yay!). He told the story about his first onscreen kiss, which was with Sharon Stone for this movie. Ironside didn't know what he should do to make the kiss work, so he talked to his wife about it. His wife went to Sharon Stone and explained the situation, and Stone replied "I'll take care of him."

Total Recall was popular in Russia back in the days. As a young girl I loved this movie, it was fun, gory, and dynamic (and had best 'russian with cocainum' Arnold). Perfect for children! Thank you for your work, it brings joy and happy memories.

Robert Paulson

Great Job guys, one of my favorite movies. Just rewatched "last action hero" and would love to here your take on it if you have any fondness for it.

Michael Ironsides as super-balding villain with bleach blond hair in SCANNERS

I just re-watched Total Recall and I choose to believe that both explanation of the endings are right. It's kind of having 2 movies in 1. Sometimes, I like to think that he really is a secret agent saving Mars and sometimes it's better if you think he is in that Rekall chair waiting for his brain to fry. Another great Arnold Sci-fi movie is The Running man. It probably has some of the best Arnold ''one liner'' of all time.

Top-tier reView right here.
