Half in the Bag: Censor

Movie theaters are starting to open back up and long-delayed blockbuster sequels are finally starting to be released like Fast and the Furios 9, A Quiet Place 2, and The Conjuring 3, so naturally Mike and Jay decided to talk about a small, surreal British movie. It's Censor!

I'M GONNA CUM!!!!!

Just watched this movie on Friday in anticipation! I really enjoyed it. It's a bit slow but it has a fun payoff.

Michael Parker

I also watched this to prepare for this episode. I thought it was pretty good, but didn't love it. I wonder if Mike or Jay at the very least have seen any other newer British horror films like Saint Maud or any films by Ben Wheatley or Peter Strickland.

Peter Varga

Yay!! You are my favorite youtubers!! Keep em coming! <3

Joshua Mannix

Mike are you proud to be the audio cut in the intro?

Mak

Always funny to watch you guys. You remind me so much of myself which is pefect so I don't have to make youtube videos.

Matt Sandwich

Wait, "Also starring: Rich Evans"? Did I go into my RLM fantasy world where Rich Evans always has a cameo and miss an actual cameo?

RLMinJP

I can't believe they missed the off camera line that foreshadowed the ending; "somebody taped over the ending"

Michael Parker

Well, I guess that's what happens when I comment before watching the video.

JTruts

lol snuck in Dunkin Donuts Al Pacino bit had me chuckling pretty damn good.

So many great reaction shots from Jay. Looks like I'm making gifs today.

boobery

I can't believe i didnt notice the aspect ratio change?? but yeah i loved it, goes alongside saint maud and the empty man as new horror-ish faves 😌

What I love is that Censor is about family. And that's what's so powerful about it.

Marvin Falz

The beginning and ending bit: beautiful! I also realized, that one of Jay's ghosts has leaped into my soul a couple of years ago, since I not only started admiring David Lynch, his TV series and his movies, when I watched Fire Walk With Me after having watched its re:View a couple of times, but I also started to like some of the more obscure stuff like Videodrome, and I know I would enjoy watching Censor.

Great content as always, I loved all the digressions from the review.

Thank you for your work.

Harry

Absolutely perfect intro

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

I'm with Jay regarding how the producer died. The movie was brilliant and so amazingly sure-handed, but that death really took me out of the movie for a couple of minutes and, even in hindsight, still feels very out of place to me. Anyway, thanks for making me aware of this movie! I'm so glad I watched it based on your recommendation before you posted this review. And great job continuing to hone your own craft. The vast majority of popular Youtube channels just coast on what's made them popular, but you guys are always growing, doing new things, and getting better.

Going to watch this soon, so I'm going to put off watching your video 'til I have. 'Video Nasties' were a huge deal in the UK in the 80s. My boyfriend read about all of them in the right-wing newspaper his mum bought, and thought, oh, these look really cool. But didn't see most of them until years later, and then most of them are a lot more boring than the press made them out to be. Just wondering if you guys have seen The Empty Man or Undergods? I'd be interested to know your thoughts.

Glad I'm not the only one who kept thinking about The Young Ones episode "Nasty" while watching this. "We'll be dead, but we'll be living. We'll be like Leonard Cohen."

Manuel Johnen

I'm curious enough about this movie to NOT watch this episode until I've seen it... ... ... this is a HEAVY sacrifice on my part, by the way, so who ever knows the director here better read this and tell her... :/

Thomas Malley

On hollywood posters: "Someone's punching someone'. Damn that's a nutshell of Hollywood.

This is probably well into overthinking territory but I also saw it as kind of a metaphor for how those calling for censorship (even going beyond film to book banning, historical negationism, abstinence only education) are often times the direct or indirect cause for a lot of the real atrocities that happen in the world, even if they're firm in their beliefs that what their doing is morally righteous. But like you guys said, it also shows how certain films can have an effect on those who are already more mentally vulnerable. Also it was kind of a throwaway line but it turns out the guy who ate his wife's face hadn't even watched the film that was blamed. Btw I've seen every F&F film up until F9 and I feel no shame.

Awesome ending to the episode. Had me laughing a bit too loud. Great writing, guys!

Shempin Jack Flash

I enjoyed "Censor" great review here. In the film I like when she requests a list of a director's films and the clerk says it will take like three days. Pre-IMDb the struggle was real! Also- Saint Maud

Shempin Jack Flash

Also- agreed on Saint Maud, a great watch!

So glad I went with your recommendation and watched the movie first. I loved it. It was very clever. Typically like most people I would like an explanation to what happened to the sister but in this movie it didn't matter. Very good. Hats off gentlemen. Creepy thing also, I did not even notice the aspect ratio changing because I was so drawn into the film.

That trophy scene stuck out to me, too. Thank you for the validation.

Katy

Wow! I had always assumed video nasty just meant porn. I mean, what else would the boys on The Young Ones be watching?

Connor Martin

I live in Canada and, for the life of me, I can't find a way to watch this damn movie.

Really a damn good movie, I'm usually very happy with Jay's recs. The only thing I have to say really is the ending, it seems like it didn'tbother anyone else, but I thought it was goofy and superfluous. I think it would have been much more impactful if it had just ended with Enid broken in the woods, the corny Black Mirror ending kinda ruined the brutality of the end for me

Really happy this came out today - I’m in lockdown at home in Sydney so watched this during a break in WFH. Love the skit elements, Mike playing up how they always mention Star Trek and Jay gets to bring that look out often. Currently can’t get that movie in Australia unless have US payment card (VPN itself not enough) so I will have to wait for that movie - it sounds great

Just watched it; I loved it. It's really a deep dive into Enid as a character and while some things weren't answered, I think the ending worked on many levels by keeping her at the focus

Anonymous

To play Devil's Advocate, I'd argue it works because of the batshit way it played out. Mike goes out to even mention in the review how it was evoking a trope found in these kind of movies. I think I can see that working, to a degree. For me, it was a metaphorical straw that broke the camel's back, leading to finally push Enid's character towards the ending. On the flipside, it did slightly take me out of the movie, so I do see Jay's point as well.

I was pleasantly surprised by the mention of the young ones and I would love to see a re:view of any weird British shows that they enjoy. Mike and Jay are familiar with the young ones so that's a possibility but I would really like a re:view of Garth Marenghi's darkplace. It seems like it might be right up their alley in terms of cheap b-movie film-craft executed for comedic value by competent film makers.

DonMac

The blurring between reality and delusion in "Censor" reminded me a lot of David Cronenberg's "Videodrome" which was released in the early '80s, the same timeframe that this movie is set in.

I didn't see the movie first, but it sounds like something I might like. I don't feel like anything was really spoiled, but I guess that varies from person to person.

andrew

Mike - do you always have that VHS copy of “Generations” on the table in front of you, or is it a nasty?

AdenPhoenix

Kind of surprised they didn't mention Videodrome at all.

So I have this little game I play with my wife called “your Dailey red letter media minute”. We’re I play some random hilarious clip for her. She’s not really a fan, but she does love all the guys. Rich Evans’ laugh actually grew on here. I can’t wait to show her the first 3 minutes. She loves Jay’s expressions when Mike talks Star Trek. She’ll love this!!!

Anonymous

Am I crazy or was there an iPhone ringing off camera just before 25:00?

brad hawkes

I’m hoping for a little voyager, ds9 or Ent love, Voyager got me into Trek and probably my favourite to this day, would love to hear your in depth thoughts on it while a monkey plays the symbols in Jays head 😅

Anonymous

At least make Jay watch the three best STTNG episodes- "Suddenly Human", "Sub Rosa", and "Masks".

Jeff Kleist

You forgot The Game, The Child, and the one with Troi and hydrogen

They'll bring in space cars to distract us when Vin Diesel eventually quits.
