Re:View - Star Trek The Next Generation Season One

Mike and Rich sit down to talk about their top picks from TNG season One. When Rich can only come up with one and a half episodes and Mike is drunk and off his brain meds - it turns into an hour and 20 minute long ramble about Season One in general. Hear their confused and rambling thoughts on a 26 ish episodes of pure cringe.

Mike likes Star Trek?!? Why haven’t you mentions this before?!

Anonymous

OMG I'm fucking hyped

Peter Varga

I love these even though I've never really watched Star Trek!

Anonymous

Me too I’ve never seen TNG but I’ll watch them talk about it all day long

Anonymous

Well, that's tonight's viewing sorted.

Alnarra

Oh god the content I crave. Also there are no good episodes in season 1 of TNG. Although hearing you guys talking about the expanse would be A+

LB876

Aaaargh!! It's "starBASE" and "SPACEdock"!!! Infuriating! (Ironically, this is the kinda crap that makes me happy that I love Star Trek.)

Anonymous

Glory to you, and your house.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

OK, just reached nearly the four minute mark. My three episodes: 11001001, Conspiracy, and The Big Goodbye. The Big Goodbye isn't good, but it's fun simply because the cast seems to be having fun, and I love the line from Cyrus Redblock, "Good manners, madam, are never a waste of time." Finally, Datalore is pretty OK. The rest really is garbage. People of Earth: if you've never seen TNG and want to get into it, start with season two's The Measure of a Man (a truly great episode); A Matter of Honor (important character development for Riker); Elementary, Dear Data (good holodeck fun!); and Q Who (important non-episodic plot developments). Then move along to season three. Watch season one when you've finished the rest of the series...if you feel like it. A better idea is to just start watching DS9 at that point.

Nick Cameron

I was just watching their other TNG review episodes over the weekend and thinking, “when are they going to make that guilty pleasures episode?” This was great! Keep going through the seasons please!

Anonymous

I wonder if these guys know how much they mean to people. I hope they do.

Anonymous

I know you guys say to skip to season 3, but I've always been of the impression that you need to watch it all, the really good is only really good because of the bad you experienced and vice versa

Anonymous

I love Trek talk!!!!! More. More. More....

AllGoodNamesRGone

I've said it before, I'm not a fan of Star Trek, but I'll watch Rich and Mike talk about the phone book because I know they'll make it informative and entertaining.

Michael Parker

I think my favorite season 1 episode was the holodeck episode "The Big Goodbye."

Chris L

I haven't watched the video yet, but I wonder if I'm the only person who loves The Last Outpost? Ferengi laser-whips! Giant Skeletor floaty-head on a soundstage set! Armin Shimerman hopping around like a rabid gerbil! And all the while it actually has a pretty solid ticking-clock script and classic Picard out-maneuvering the Ferengi commander. It's like the best and worst of TNG at the same time, but even the worst stuff is great.

Marvin Falz

Not to badmouth Heart of Glory, not to glorify TOS, but I think Errand of Mercy is the best episode with Klingons. The Klingons basically represented the worst of humanity, but from the perspective of the Organians, Kirk and the Federation were equally bad. Errand of Mercy portrayed Kor and Kirk as the same type of personality, soldiers, who believe they're superior to the other, and who are stuck in war. So the Organians solved the problem for them. --- Symbiosis, 11001001, The Arsenal of Freedom, Heart of Glory are episodes, which I enjoyed watching too. Troi, unfortunately, felt superfluous in season 1 most of the time. Tasha Yar's goodbye message was nice. --- I remembered, that TNG was part of late night TV in 1998/1999, together with Cheers and the Harald Schmidt Show (a Letterman knock-off). It was enjoyable to watch the nightly episode of TNG and Cheers. It is much more enjoyable to watch them in their original language. Maybe, maybe I'll start watching TNG again, but tbh, I like it better to watch you guys talk about TNG. :) --- Patreon seems to auto-delete comments, when they contain certain words.

Isn't it nice to talk and think about the known entities that we like from our past? Just eternally perfect and safe from dogshit. The only hack writer who can fuck up my past is me.

Anonymous

I'm appreciating how much longer the videos are, these days

Anonymous

I could watch a whole series of "Two fat middle-aged hack frauds reminisce about their favorite childhood TV show"

Michael Parker

It was a pretty jarring tonal shift at the beginning of the series going from the really thematically heavy episode introducing Q to the episode where everyone on the enterprise gets really horny for each other.

Anonymous

my name is also Jared, and I completely agree. It's nice to be able to compliment another Jared these days.

Peter Varga

Rich looks rather pale in this video... I hope he's fine and it's just quarantine tan

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

OK, I take back Conspiracy. You guys are right. And the final alien was ridiculous. Replace with...um...I dunno. Season one really does suck. The Arsenal of Freedom's concept always reminded me of a Paul Verhoeven movie (early Hollywood-era Paul Verhoeven).

Tanya

DO do season two. And the rest.

Neil Peart, Lord of Drums

A season 2 review? Every season? For goodness' sake, just do DS9 already :)

Anonymous

Snyder Cut HITB? very cool

Anonymous

Snyder cut is gonna be BIS

Anonymous

Excellent as always! I recall Mike mentioning wanting to do a Re:View of DOOM PATROL: Season 1 once Rich watches it... That would be magic!

Anonymous

The Klingons are space vikings. Honor and glory...

Sam

This was a fun watch! None of my friends care about Star Trek so it's nice to listen. I made the mistake of starting TNG from the beginning after seeing Measure of a Man, might not have made it through if I wasn't certain there was something to look forward to.

Sam

For me there are specific episodes that benefited from the suffering, not sure I would have cared quite as much about the Tasha Yar apology episodes if Skin of Evil hadn't been such garbage.

Mike St Louis

Thanks for taking one for the team! S2 has a few eps I like. Bring it on!

Anonymous

I really loved this episode fellas, very wholesome and cozy with a lil crumb of rich laughing just a lil bit

Anonymous

They're talking to this object like it's an object.

Anonymous

I just loved every minute of that.

Rhea

"Do NOT ask us to do this thing that I have just now unilaterally decided we will be doing." I guess if I can't have top cutest Data's cat episodes I'll take top cutest Worf episodes.

Anonymous

When are you coming out with your remake of 'The Neutral Zone' where the businessman is constantly saying, "stonks" and "hodl"?

Michael Matzat

Will the Snyder cut be on best of the worst or half in the bag?

Anonymous

Can you do season 2 please.

Katy

Many thanks, gentlemen. That was delightful.

andrew

Thanks for the great discussion. To one of your closing points: I think Michael and Denise Okuda deserve huge credit for establishing the technological consistency of TNG as the show progressed. Also, moving Geordi to Chief Engineer and building out that aspect of the ship was a significant post Season 1 improvement.

Twisted Wishes

I actually think Discovery season 3 was good, and I HATED season 1 and 2. The first and last episode of season 3 had stuff I didn't like, but the were still better then most of season 1 and 2, and the rest of the season was enjoyable. A fact which shocks me. So more season reviews of things please!

Davey Cakes

I consider Datalore to be "must-see" even if it's not a particularly good episode.

Anonymous

Thought for sure Datalore would be one of your picks.

Tony C

Thank you! My brother and I are always so happy when you do STNG videos! So glad we so much more to discuss in the FUTURE! Your TNG videos brought me to your Patreon!

Anonymous

i joined patreon because of your trek content. pls do all seasons

Anonymous

Please do TOS!

Tony C

had to come back and say thanks again fellas. i could watch a 2 hour discussion of every episode and pay 20 dollars for each one.

Anonymous

I'd love to see something like Voyager, or maybe DS9. Really any of your top episodes in this 'Mike and Rich talk about Star Trek' series is great! Thanks.

Anonymous

Always great to see some analysis of TNG. I was one of the "What no Kirk?" kids who only knew of TNG from Reading Rainbow but have come to appreciate the show in later years.

The Thinking Cat...Former Cthulhu Pofit Neo Normie and Masked fat guy but now a Cat ??

Really as Season 1's go the 2 best in my book is DS9 and Enterprise really most sci Fi shows have clunker seasons like Season 6 of lost The BSG Pilot movie Season 2 of Babylon 5 Dr Who has so many clunkers like the 2nd series and 11-13 have been moribund. Still some shows never get good Firefly Discovery Picard and worst of all for me Caprica and Crusade which both were sister shows to greater Sci Fi properties but never made it beyond the first series.

Anonymous

This was great, thank you!

Anonymous

Do more Star Trek please. You are at your best when you talk Star Trek.

Anonymous

Please do DS9 next. It's so much more interesting as a series and I would love to hear you guys discuss it.

Anonymous

We can only hope. I am so sick of Trekkies blaming DS9 for the downfall of the franchise. We all know the TNG movies are what did that, not DS9 or even Voyager. Whenever I hear someone say "TOS and TNG are the only real Star Trek series" I want to punch them in the face.

Tanya

I love how angry you're making Shatner.

Anonymous

heyy mike it isn't beneficial for parasites to kill their hosts. Host dies, parasite dies. More of an advantage to keep a steady stream of nutrients without killing the host. I studied a parasite in bumble bees that has been incubating in bumble bees for as long as they can trace it back!

Anonymous

But this started so many memes! Who can forget such classics as "Shut up Wesley!" ;)

Adam

Funny TNG tidbit: I've been re-watching the series with the French dubs for practice, and the Vash character is renamed "Virian," most likely because "vache" is the French word for "cow".
