A mere Almond

There is nothing weird at all about that emotional panel you chose as your favorite. Yes Berserk has gore, violence, nudity, epic fights, etc. But that is not why Berserk is considered the greatest of all manga. Its the emotions and deep themes. I would argue it would be weird if your favorite panels didn't include the many many deep and emotional panels that will come. First time I read the manga I decided to search about fetus and dead mothers to find out more. Its extremely rare for a child to survive after the mother dies. Usually the baby just dies from lack of oxygen in the womb shortly after the mother's death, unless the baby is quickly surgically removed. In rare circumstances, if the mother dies while having birthing contractions, it is possible for the baby to be born after the mother is already dead. My hypothesis is that Gut's mother was hung just as she was ready to give birth. And since she was dangling from the tree, gravity helped out. So now you have experienced the start of the manga and the anime. Which one do you prefer? The anime gives you much less information. So when the eclipse happens and Griffith sacrifices everyone, it is shocking moment. That is the benefit of this approach. But the manga tells you right away that Griffith activated a Behelit and sacrificed Guts. And now we are just getting the details in the golden age arc. This approach allows readers to really hone in on the themes of the arc. It allows readers to not be fooled by the "successful role model who works hard to achieve their dream". It allows readers to see the dark side of dreams and ambition. And readers are forced to carefully analyze the relationship between Guts and Griffith because we already know what will happen in the end. But the lack of the surprise and shock is a negative. Both are really good. Maybe I am biased because I started with the anime. I do prefer it that way. And the anime doesn't take away from the themes and the relationships. And I believe Miura himself was the mastermind of the way the anime started.

I am SO excited to see what Berserk has in store for me, especially with the panel like we see for Guts at the end of this volume! That is insane about the mother and the baby being born right as the mother dies/is dying – very interesting to note! I’ll have to bring that up in a future discussion! That is a really good hypothesis, though! Honestly, it’s REALLY hard to pick which one I prefer at this point, especially for the reason you said about the eclipse and the surprise of the “other dimension.” However, I usually enjoy the format of “anime first, manga second,” because if the manga is better, you get to enjoy that last, and if the anime was better, you got to see it first. :) It enhances the viewing, at least for me, personally. So I feel pretty lucky with Berserk right now. And there’s SO much left to go after the anime, so I’ll get that experience of surprise with it! I do appreciate the anime so much and am glad I watched it first, so that now reading the manga, you get that added appreciation! Thank you for the kind words and comment! Onwards to the Golden Age arc!

I personally had a similar experience with this story starting with 1997 anime and going back to manga. It really was a perfect bait and a perfect introduction. Things just seemingly fall in place and don't overwhelm you as much on the second go. Goal of production feels more intentional and well thought out with this series in particular. Count is such a fascinating character from that perspective. Horrible on so many levels. And going into meeting with the God hand we already saw transformation. There is that idea of inevitability of choice. And if anyone count would be a perfect example of individual who had fallen that of course he would take the offer not to mention with possibility of punishment. But then he doesn't. I find it nice that it gives that glimpse of humanity for someone you would never expect it from. And just general hope in the series. The relation between cutting off people and loosing your humanity!

Yeah, I was really excited by the chance to see the manga after the anime and connect things that I wouldn’t have the first time around! It’s been a great experience! But yes, the count being both horrible and in the end making a decision that was not what I expected! The fact that glimmer of hope exists there and shines despite all the despair seems so emblematic of Berserk! Thank you for the comment!
