2023-11-16 10:14:53 Great reaction and discussion!! It was really interesting to listen to you talking about all that philosophical stuff!! The sexual tension between Kogami and Ginoza in the beginning of this episode is so strong XD I love how Matsuoka and Kogami are mentoring Akane. I like how non condescending it is. They respect her as her own, very smart and capable person and only offer advice, not directions. They don't treat her like she is incompetent or look down at her just because she is new in this job. Even Ginoza, who has his rules and is very stiff, outright tells her "those are your choices to make, your decisions, even if I would hate them." There isn't a point in which any of them takes agency from Akane and I love and appreciate that so much. Also I really like how all the conclusions Kogami comes to are based on facts he knows could be deducted in real life with the same amount of information. Like. This is a perfect way to portray a smart person and I looove how it doesn't use the "smart people are near omniscient" trope. Also the philosophical stuff is so interesting. Its very thought provoking and I think the topics those episode cover are really relevant now, so much so that you couldn't believe that this anime came out 10 years ago. The way Makishima is wondering what would happen if he gives the people the power to act violently without any consequences reminds me of the plot of this movie, where basically, for a period of 12 hours, there are no laws and everything you do is legal, no matter how messed up it is. I bring that up, because the movie operates on the idea that if there were no consequences for their actions, people would always choose to act violently. They work on the same idea that if you give people power, they would always end up using it for evil. Its an idea I personally disagree with wholeheartedly, but its always interesting to see it brought up in fiction. The all time question: what is the basic instinct for a human when given power? To be a cruel or to be kind? I love how high alcohol resistance Akane has XD She be chugging that stuff but she is not even buzzed. She is such a badass!! Also! Time for VA fun facts!! The inspectors boss lady who appeared in this episode is voiced by Yoshiko Sakakibara, who also voices the narrator in season 2 of jjk and Gi-Gan from Akatsuki no Yona (old pirate lady). She is a veteran voice actress, who voice acts ever since 1980's! Another voice actor you might recognize is VA of the school girl Shimotsuki (the one that was scared by Oryo), who is voiced by Ayane Sakura, who also gives voice to Uraraka Ochako! Also. One voice actress you would never expect appears in this too! Maaya Sakamoto, who also voice acts for Ciel from Kuroshitsuji, voice acts as Rikako Oryo! She has quite the range!!

Kougami is really showing off his skills at being able to analyse and notice the difference in Spooky Boogie’s idiosyncrasies. Definitely giving off Sherlock vibes for his detecting abilities. Masaoka is our boomer character, and now that I'm older I do relate to him a little more with some things 🤣 But other things like how he is with technology and cosplay he reminds me so much of my parents. The clean-up robots are creepy yet almost cute. Yeah it definitely feels like Masaoka and Kougami are looking after Akane in that moment in Sugawara’s apartment. Which puts her in the opposite position of what Ginoza has told her the role of Inspector is (by Ginoza’s words Enforcers are dogs for the Inspectors to use and keep hold of their leashes). I honestly love the use of perspective with this show, especially this episode with following Mido and the flashback. The flashback being a singular angle shot from inside a car and only hearing the recorded conversations between Kougami and Sasayama is a great method for grabbing your attention to try and play detective with the information you’re giving. And then to switch to seeing it from Kougami’s perspective definitely builds the tension and understanding for why his crime coefficient went so high, and why he chose trying to investigate further over therapy. More lesbian flags flying with Shion referring to Kunizuka by her first name 🥰 You geeking out over Plato and the idea of death of the author was a very enjoyable watch. When you did mention about how you'd maybe get some lighter shows to watch I have to admit I giggled at the idea of Psycho-Pass being 'lighter'. Some of the topics they delve into are quite dark, but there are others that are very deep in a philosophical way. Love the Se7en comparison! But it really says a lot for Makishima's character that he's a bit more philosophical than Kevin Spacey's character in that movie! [He's also much more stylish 🤣] The one thing about watching these kinds of Sci-Fi shows set in a creator's version of the future is that it can be a little frightening going back and watching it years later because some things seem way more realistic. A lot of the way social interactions, certain work being carried out by robots, etc. are shown in the anime does remind me of the way society currently is just ten years on from when this anime aired. And in that span of a decade it's become even easier to see the fictional future shown in Psycho-Pass as partially being something that could become reality. Rousseau, if I remember the little bit we did about him in Sociology, puts more emphasis on the individual than the group, and believed that the government has a duty to ensure individuals are treated equally. Gotta say watching this scene now, the question Masaoka poses about the hunters hunting separately or together was giving me reminders of Mei Nianqing's lesson to the Xianle trio on the single cup of water 😅 Both are quite complex questions, and different people (due to their differing experiences) may each give a different answer. Cho is Korean, hence his slightly different character design. The way they do the world-building in this series is definitely up there amongst my favourites for how they show us what this futuristic place is like; both in the glitzy and glamourous places, and the darker and less affluent areas. Same with how it's thrown in about people not even daring to drink socially for fear it'll affect their Hue, but virtual highs and therapeutic methods are seen as acceptable and somehow don't change their crime coefficient. Definitely gets more grisly and darker these episodes with the posing of the bodies and delving into topics like rape and abuse. And none of it feels out of place or as if it’s been included just for the sake of including darker themes. I feel it also adds a realistic, true crime aspect to the anime. New seiyuu for these episodes: Sasayama is voiced by Asanuma Shintarou, who has also voiced Hiroto from Assassination Classroom; Kuramochi from Daiya; Ugetsu from Given; Masa from Tsurune; and Aiden Field from Violet Evergarden. The female chief Ginoza speaks with is voiced by Sakakibara Yoshiko, and she’s also voiced Gi-Gang from Yona; and the Narrator in Jujutsu Kaisen. Ouryou is voiced by Sakamoto Maaya, and she’s also voiced Agatha Christie from Bungou Stray Dogs; Takada Kiyomi from Death Note; Makinami from Evangelion; Kasuga from Hoshiai no Sora; Tamayo from Kimetsu no Yaiba; Ciel from Black Butler; and Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club. Yoshika is voiced by Kayano Ai, who is also the seiyuu for Yuno from Yona; Kanae from Kimetsu no Yaiba; and Dominique from Vanitas.

Ahhh, thank you so much! I had a LOT of fun with this episode in the discussion! And yessss, definitely some *ahem* TENSION between Ginoza and Kogami – I’m here for Kogami being a bisexual king! 🙂 I agree that Matsaoka and Kogami are watching over Akane in their own way. And yes, Ginoza makes his views known but doesn’t try to influence her in a manipulative way. Kogami figuring everything out in such a realistic way for him makes a lot of sense! I’m soooo interested in what else philosophical and tying to our own world now will be explored in this series, now! Akane also being a badass is so fun! Girl can hold her liquor! Ooohhhh, all the VA info is amazing, especially Oryo’s – I mean, another character making a deal with a possible “devil?” Type cast much? ;) Thank you for the info and the kind words and comment!

Kogami really showing off that Sherlock vibery, isn’t he? 😛 I love Masaoka, though! And I agree, being older, I relate to him more but he DOES remind me of my own father, as well! Also, the clean-up robots are cute until you realize their function. I do love how Masaoka and Kogami are watching after Akane, too. The POV these episodes can take is REALLY good, I agree! Shion and Kunizuka are canon in my book! I definitely geeked out this week! 😀It has me SO excited to see what else gets brought up this series! And yessss, the Se7en comparisons! It is also TERRIFYING to see some of these elements of the “future” being realistic as it is! Thank you for the reminder of Rousseau – I didn’t take Sociology in college, but I knew I heard of him. And yes Masaoka and MNQ would probably get along well! Same with Akane and XL! Thank you for the info on Cho as well, too! Yes, the world-building is SO fascinating and top notch in this! And yes, the world is getting darker and more grisly…and has that “true crime” realism, for sure! Thank you for the VA info and the kind words and comment! I appreciate it!!
