This volume is definitely chunks for each section, especially in comparison to how they were able to divide up the web chapters in the previous volumes. I think this is your biggest number of chapters together too. Mu Qing is such a salty, petty wench in these chapters! I feel like he's yet another one that holds too tightly to the past, namely his past and status he held before Xie Lian helped him to study Martial Arts with them in Xian Le. Xie Lian feeling so much trust for Hua Cheng. I facepalmed so hard when I first read that part with Xie Lian telling Mu Qing and Feng Xin that he's connected by a red string to Hua Cheng! I can easily imagine the expression on Mu Qing and Feng Xin's faces in that moment 🤣 Hua Cheng with the umbrella in the silk pit is such a Mary Poppins moment 😂 But I love Mu Qing and Feng Xin being shocked at Hua Cheng not caring about them. They were both pretty dismissive of Xie Lian saying he'd come to save them. And, Mu Qing especially, weren't the kindest to Hua Cheng's gege. Your realisation of what all the statues were was great. But Mo Xiang Tong Xiu really giving us such high expectations; get you a man that will carve 10,000 statues in your honour 🥰 The Cave of Ten Thousand Gods really is like a fangirl/fanboy shrine 😂 Bet you didn't expect for Hua Cheng's past as Hong-er to be revealed to Xie Lian immediately after the Mu Qing/Fu Yao and Feng Xin/Nan Feng reveal 🤣 Whilst Hua Cheng was described as creepy and cold with how he suddenly appeared before them and the way he treated Mu Qing and Feng Xin, I've never had the same visceral fear in my gut with anything Hua Cheng has done in comparison to how Bai Wuxiang suddenly enters the story. And we get the cover scene!!! Been so excited for you to learn about Never have I related more to Xie Lian than him being weak towards Hua Cheng when he's so confident 🤣 It wouldn't be Tian Guan Ci Fu if there weren't some blushy shy romantic moments whilst there is horror all around them. "What matters is *you*, not the state of you" is definitely one of my favourite lines from this novel 🥰 It's such an integral part of Hua Cheng to protect Xie Lian, even from a light wind 🥰🥺 Your reaction was perfect for that ending on top of how much happened in these chapters. Truly such a rollercoaster whilst also getting pelted with so many things. Oh I'm with you that as much as I adore the temple confession in Mo Dao Zu Shi (and it does fit how chaotic a character Wei Wuxian is) the confession in this moment between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is more like a realistic confession, simply because unlike in Mo Dao Zu Shi we don't have Bai Wuxiang standing waiting for them to be done for him to continue with his plans like Jin Guangyao does for Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji. Now I do get that *no one* was expecting that to come out of Wei Wuxian's mouth in that moment so some of it could be partly explained as Jin Guangyao's brain taking a moment to compute what he just heard, but considering the way he is the rest of the story it is a little unrealistic for Jin Guangyao to be so accepting of WangXian having their lovey-dovey moment whilst he's trying to kidnap people 🤣 I definitely agree that Mu Qing and Feng Xin don't allow Xie Lian to have his own agency with deciding what to do about Hua Cheng. Both definitely fall into the more common category amongst the heavenly officials with having a negative opinion on ghosts, especially Hua Cheng. Whereas Xie Lian makes decisions on how he feels about a person after he's gotten to know them, whether they're a ghost, god, or mortal. It could be very much that both Mu Qing and Feng Xin still see Xie Lian as that young naïve Crown Prince of Xianle, and not the person he has evolved into being after his 800 years of living. Hua Cheng, on the other hand, sees the boy Xie Lian used to be alongside who he has now become. I feel the same as you that I wasn't frustrated by them being protective of Xie Lian (I'm all for protective friends and them being suspicious of a potential love interest for said friend), but the annoying part is them preventing Xie Lian from being able to move or speak his own mind. Loved the Bai Wuxiang and Lestat comparison! Bai Wuxiang's sudden reappearance (and him potentially not being at full strength) definitely felt very much like Lestat suddenly popping back up alive in Interview with the Vampire. Great reaction and discussion as always!

Haha love your comment girl!! And yeah that Lestat comparison had me gasping on how on point it was and also because Queen of the Damned and the other books of the saga are my favorite of Anne Rive 😁😁

I remember reading this for the first time and in my notebook which I used to write notes I literally wrote "Mu Qing is a bitch" lmao. I still love him as a character, he's probably one of my faves in this story but DEAR LORD is he annoying in these chapters. I can't wait for you to experience the entire story cuz my parents probably think I've lost my mind from how loud I'm cackling like a scheming villain who knows something the audience doesn't lol
