Bilibili really out here confusing the heck out of us on the update schedule. The days already blur together for me nevermind with how fast the weeks are going by. Don't need the added confusion from their app. Definitely similar pose to that moment with Orihime and Ichigo. Just more meaningful with the Hualian one considering the long, long, long build-up of getting Xie Lian to this point. The way Xie Lian just thinks in circles to internally justify being close to Hua Cheng would honestly make me want to throttle any other character if they pulled the same thing. But because it's Xie Lian and he's so repressed and innocent I can't help but give him a pass. I honestly loved how you went into this with the mindset that we'd get no answers, and then when Mo Xiang Tong Xiu goes all creepy on us with Xie Lian seeing Bai Wuxiang's terrifying mask you were like "NOPE!" 🤣 Snow like that is extremely deceiving! Though I've never taken down a hole, I did slip on this big block of ice in Sweden thinking it was just part of the compacted snow around it. In my defence there was a cute St. Bernard that distracted me as I was walking forwards. Hua Cheng was behind Xie Lian so *he* didn't have the same excuse of a distraction 😆 But I do love that, at this point, Hua Cheng helping to pull Xie Lian up is described as "natural". Really shows the progress there has been between our Scrap-Collecting God and his Ghost King. Xie Lian grabbing Hua Cheng's hand and running away before suddenly remembering the other two (who were the damn culprits for the avalanche) will never not be funny to me 🤣 Xie Lian has got his priorities right! The poking out of the snow scene after the avalanche always makes me think of Mulan, "They popped out of the snow. Like daisies!" 😂 Romania.exe has frozen That immediately came to mind at the way you just froze before reading aloud that single bone-chilling line about Bai Wuxiang appearing before Xie Lian. I felt for your poor chair though when it was revealed to be a dream fake out 😆 Xie Lian and Hua Cheng walking past all those statues of differing poses just throws me straight back to the Weeping Angels in Doctor Who, specifically in 'The Time of Angels' and 'Flesh and Stone'. Just for added creepiness to that whole setting 😅 Romania: What is this volume so far? A test on the multitude of ways to make you nervous 🤣 The fork in the road, for another link to Volume 1, reminds me a lot of Xie Lian and Hua Cheng's meeting on the ox cart. In order to escape from the ghosts during the Ghost Festival they take the path on the left (after the reveal of Xie Lian's horrible luck and Hua Cheng's good luck). I adore that Xie Lian's way of deciding on the overall health of Feng Xin and Mu Qing 😆 He really decided "Well if they can continue having yelling matches at each other after the last one causing an avalanche, they're bound to be fine!" Xie Lian's interactions with Hua Cheng's Swiss army knife butterflies will never not be adorable 🥺 His little "thank you" to the little butterfly going into the pit is just the sweetest. You gotta love that the way Feng Xin and Mu Qing are "found out" is because they become too aggravated with the other. That reveal has honestly been one of the hardest to not accidentally spoil. At times I had to double check if it was Mu Qing or Feng Xin, or their clones, doing something in order to make sure I didn't refer to them wrongly. Also having to be so careful when helping you to remember that Nan Feng was Feng Xin's "deputy" and Fu Yao was Mu Qing's. This reveal was sadly one of the things I was spoiled on when watching the donghua for the first time (before reading the novel). So because of that I can't say if I would have guessed/figured out the truth surrounding these two or not. Also Xie Lian turning to face the wall and pretending to have not heard their slip up is hilarious and so child-like. It's really not something we're used to from Xie Lian...but it does remind me a bit more of his childish innocence when the three of them were in his room after their performance at the Heavenly Ceremonial Procession in Xianle. Once again we get rid of one mystery only to have another take its place...I have now realised that the board of unanswered questions is linked to Marvel's Hydra (or the mythical monster hydra) 🤣 "If a head is cut off, two more shall take its place." Mo Xiang Tong Xiu doing a bit of sleight of hand with distracting you with other things/unanswered questions, and leaving it until you've almost forgotten your questions only to suddenly dump a reveal on you when you least expect it. No need to apologise if you do end up reading ahead. This was definitely a strange spot to end a chapter. Yes! The eagles reference in relation to the gravity at the Kiln 🥰 Such a perfect comparison! Here's hoping though that whenever the donghua does get to this point (and if the live action covers it) that they will include a brief explanation unlike with The Lord of the Rings movies. As much as I love those movies and how Peter Jackson was able to adapt the books, as well as the books themselves, all it would've taken is a couple of lines of dialogue to explain why the eagles couldn't go to Mordor until after the One Ring was destroyed. You saying the dream fake out scene made you realise this novel isn't going to be fun did make me laugh. She really wrote that sequence so well! Definitely gave me goosebumps thinking Bai Wuxiang was there. After your comments about unanswered questions from Volume 1 all the callbacks to events from then did make me laugh. Especially as nearly none of them touches on the questions you do still have from back then 🤣 No Romania, not the Sirius reference! 😭 Sirius Black, from his introduction in Book 3, was my favourite character and he was fine much too soon! Especially with *how* he died. At least with Dumbledore and those that feel at the Battle of Hogwarts we had their bodies to give a goodbye to. Sirius was just beyond the creepy whispering veil, just out of reach. Also in my mind the fluttering of the veil always made me think of the Dementors' cloaks 😭 Feng Xin remembers/holds on to the past, which links to how Mo Xiang Tong Xiu has shown other characters such as Lang Qianqiu, He Xuan, Yin Yu, etc. Whilst we also have characters that have moved on from their past or are trying to forget parts of it like Xie Lian, Quan Yizhen, Yushi Huang, and Pei Ming.

Aaaaand i’m back!! I just couldn’t resist, especially when I saw that you’re already getting into book 6!! Going back a little bit for the last two reviews I didn’t have time to comment on, I really thought the readthrough for volume 5 was going to be slow. It was the part of the book that I was never really into in the first read through, but reading it now, I’ve come to realize I never gave it the love it deserves. Literally every chapter is really like “wtf? Hahahaha…WTF??!!?” Every time we see him, I feel like my love for Qi Rong just grows exponentially. Is it bad that I believe he’s become a better father than most of the fathers in mdzs??? Although, minus points for all the cursing and cannibalism hahahahaha 😂😂😂 The whole password situation was just comically brilliant, and the fact that he had to think of new words to avoid saying “dog-f*** Xie Lian” sent me to new levels of hysterics. I will never stop being amused by Qi Rong’s antics. It’s also funny that he’s more aware of Hualian’s feelings for each other than Hualian are. At this point, it’s getting a little embarrassing for Xie Lian and Hua Cheng (although more-so Xie Lian) 🤣🤣🤣 I also never realized until you brought it up, but I think it’s so interesting how Xie Lian is known as the laughingstock of the Heavens, and, in turn, Qi Rong is the laughingstock of the calamities. Their goals are quite similar too — Qi Rong wants to have the fame and respect of an actual calamity, while Xie Lian wants to earn more merits and rebuild his status as a god. They landed themselves on opposite ends of the spectrum though—Xie Lian is on the path to bettering himself and helping those in need however he can thus he was chosen for the life of a Heavenly Official, but Qi Rong is doing it solely for the notoriety and to only reap its benefits for himself thus he was chosen for the life as a Savage-level ghost. It’s just insane how mxtx establishes them like an antithesis of each other. I do enjoy the idea that the Rain Master is the one woman who Pei Ming is awkward around. I ship it pretty neutrally, not particularly enthusiastic about it but not at all disliking it. But man, am I such a sucker for the playboy tripping over himself for a girl who is completely unaffected by his charms. The Rain Master’s entire existence keeps Pei Ming humble, and plus she’s a total badass. I’m so glad her reveal wasn’t spoiled for you! Her whole backstory was just so tragic. I like to think that another reason why the king shed only one single tear when Yushi asks him for the throne was to represent that, of his many sons and daughters, only one was willing to sacrifice herself for him, and that he did not want to shed any tears for the other sons and daughters who planned to let him die without a moment’s hesitation. And not to enforce the idea or anything, but it could also be playing with the idea that it’s a sign of weakness for men to cry, so him shedding that single tear was him showing vulnerability to the one person who cared about him in those final moments. I wish we got more appearances of the Rain Master in previous volumes, but I can understand why MXTX left her story and reveal for this volume. SPEAKING OF REVEALS — THE NAN FENG AND FU YAO REVEAL IS HEREEEEE!!! This is one of the reveals that I had to bite my tongue nearly every time you said something. Every time you mistook their names, it made me cackle bc you technically weren’t wrong 🤣🤣🤣 I think now I can bring up why that small part in episode 4/5 of the donghua where they’re all talking in the communication array about the Xuan Ji incident/Hua Cheng, and Feng Xin and Mu Qing are about to leave but Xie Lian stops them to say thank you is one of my favorite scenes from the donghua. It was a donghua-only scene, and, as this chapter established, Xie Lian had suspicions from the very beginning. So, when he speaks to them privately, it feels like it’s implied that he was thanking them as they were rather than thanking them for sending their ‘deputies’ to help him. And their reactions just made the whole thing so bittersweet because it probably made them so happy to be thanked but they also had to face the reality of how estranged they’ve become that they had to resort to disguising themselves to help him. And I don’t think you were being mean with Mu Qing at all like you mentioned in the discord. As a Mu Qing stan, I think what you said was all completely valid. The imposter syndrome thing and that Mu Qing is that kind of person who can’t take a joke. Honestly, I think that’s what makes him all the more complex. That’s not to say that he should be allowed to treat people terribly, but I think at this point it goes without saying that characters aren’t just one dimensional. I still can’t believe you’re already on volume 6. Time flies, and yet still no news about season 2 or the audio drama 😔 At least, I have your tgcf content to keep me going until then! Anyways, loved the reaction. We are already off to a great start with this volume, and I’m so excited to hear more of your reviews!!

Oh, there’s more chemistry with HuaLian than sadly I EVER saw with Ichigo and Orihime, much to my chagrin. And XL’s reverence of the butterflies will never NOT be adorable; agreed! We forgive XL for a lot of his obliviousness and innocence because of all he’s been through and his kind personality – I do love that there is progress between them! And the Mulan reference! YES! The snow on the mountain and all the avalanches give me that vibe as well! BWX as ANY answer is creepy as all get out! That dream sequence was SO haunting! How DARE MXTX do that to us! Romania.exe hasn’t fared too well with this volume so far. It is definitely proving how it can make me nervous in so many ways! AND YES, someone else noted the Weeping Angels reference with the statues and that is so the case! I can definitely see it! OOHHHHH the tie back to the cart and going left from volume 1! That’s amazing! XL’s gauging of MQ and FX’s safety is hilarious; just like with QR, XL can be a bit savage! The reveal - ahhh – it should have been so obvious (maybe it seemed TOO obvious to be real?) but I love the way it happens, too, and XL just avoiding conflict by turning his back to them is SO in-character. I’m so sad you were spoiled about that, though! 😢 OMG - the Board with unresolved plots IS like Hydra! This story is so good at slowly addressing the questions we’ve carried since Volume 1 and then making you realize there were other questions you SHOULD have been asking instead! Ohhhh yes, Sirius’s death is one of the CREEPIEST things I read as a kind; my friend literally stopped reading the series after that moment! It was CRUSHING, becuase he was her favorite character. . That’s a neat note about how characters remember or try to forget/move on from their past! Thank you for the comment! SO excited for the next set!

Heyyyy, YAY! I’m so glad to see you back in the comments! 😀I definitely think breaking up Volume 5 the way it worked out, helped! Things are so chaotic and weird and I could see people wanting to skim through it but I have enjoyed the ride it has been! OH MY GOD – Qi Rong as a better father than most in MDZS? THE SHADE. I mean, aside from the cannibalism and cursing…you’re….not…wrong? That is SUCH a good point, though, about how they are antitheses of each other! I’ll have to bring that up in a future reaction! I definitely think that whether you romantically ship Pei Ming and the Rain Master or not, it is fun to think that even in this situation, MXTX uses Pei Ming as a pin cushion, haha! I love her character, though! Her sad backstory and yet how she perseveres! And yes, FINALLY! NF and FY REVEAL! I’m so glad that my brain can relax after confusing them for so long! My brain was trying to tell me something! And that moment of the donghua! OOOOOOHHHH – I’ll have to note that too! And yes, MQ is VERY interesting – he’s sort of like PM to me; I want to know more about him and find him interesting, but I also like that he’s kind of a pin cushion in the series at this point. Oh my gosh, I do feel sad the audio drama seems in permanent hiatus, but I am confident that maybe by the time I finish this novel, S2 will be out? And hopefully the live action down the road? I’m SO ready for Volume 6 and to talk about it with you all! Thanks for the kind words and comment!
