**REUNITED HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

What a way to kick off this season! We learn the location and fates of some of our characters, faced with decisions and surrounded by some crazy personalities! But of course, at the center of it all is the one Dazai describes as "The Strongest Man" of the Detective Agency...and my heart was SOARING this episode -- when it wasn't freaking out from the reveals!

NOTE: I know there are likely things different from the manga to the anime, but PLEASE, since I am planning to look at the manga after this season, please DO NOT tell me what has changed in the episodes from the manga to the anime!

I was blissfully unaware that season 5 was even coming out let alone a first episode until I got the pateron notification LMAO. So much happened in this episode and I was glad to watch along with you! I've seen Nikolai shipped with Fyodor in Fanart and was curious about how that was or what. After seeing this episode I'm enlightened and still confused haha. I'm glad Sigma is okay, my beloved <3 "Akatugawa's boyfriend coat" is Honestly so true. I think if Rashomon weren't fabric (??) it'd be a cat that likes only Akutagawa and comes to like Atsushi to Akatugawas displeasure.

I can't believe it's already here, right? And there was SO MUCH happening in this episode! It's crazy! "I'm enlightened and still confused" LMAO -- that is EXACTLY how this season feels already! But yes, glad Sigma is okay! Bless him. The comparison of Rashomon to the cat that would like Atsushi, much to Akatugawa's chagrin, is perfect! I am SO ready to see our emo boy again, but I know the wait will be worth it! Thank you for the comment! :D

We've finally reached the infamous Fyolai scene, that birthed the ship. xD Honestly, I was left utterly captivated by this scene when I first saw it, just like with Nikolai's conversations with Atsushi and the government guy last season. Nikolai IS unhinged to some degree, no doubt, and yet you can't help but be fascinated by him, and yearn to know more..... This is all just my own speculation/interpretation, but there is an inherent sadness and tragedy that permeates him, I feel, which is what makes me so interested in him as a character: he clearly feels trapped somehow within his mind, and wants to act in illogical ways to "prove" the existence of free will. For example, wanting to die when anyone else in that situation would want to survive, and killing freely while being perfectly sane and knowing that murder is bad and feeling a sense of guilt from it like anyone else, as he admits is the case for him. And now, admiring and loving Fyodor, his self-proclaimed only friend and the only one he says truly understands him and his goals and his reason for being the way he is (his wording actually reminds me a LOT of how Dazai describes Oda at the end of the Dark Era novel: "Oda Sakunosuke understood him much more than he’d ever imagined—right up to his very heart, almost to the center of his mind. Dazai didn’t realize until then that someone had known him so well."), but wanting to kill him in spite of those feelings, to prove that he is "free" from what human emotions govern people to do. The tragic irony in this is that I feel like even if he were to succeed in killing Fyodor, he would be devastated and his feelings become even stronger, and then he'd realize that he's not free at all, because his love for Fyodor can never be eradicated. It almost feels like repressed homosexuality to be honest, or at least a metaphor for that, which would make a lot of sense considering that the real-life Nikolai was also in love with a male friend of his, but suffered greatly under religious abuse/conversion therapy for being gay, all the way up to his horrific death..... It was devastating to read, and I can't help but wonder if it relates to BSD Nikolai. He's probably the most enigmatic and confusing character in the entire series, but I love him so much; he prompts so many philosophical questions, and there's been so many discussions over the years trying to make sense of him and his mentality (just like Eren in AoT, free will and birds and all, eh?). It's so amazing to see how Ranpo has developed as a character throughout the series, including Untold Origins; I wasn't really a fan of him in the beginning, but now I've truly come to appreciate him as one of the best characters imo 💖 And it's really sweet to me that Dazai considers him the strongest man of the agency, which is so antithetical to Fyodor's views, as you pointed out. Dazai and Ranpo could easily be competitive towards each other, with them both being the geniuses, but instead there's nothing but mutual respect and trust between them, I'm sure because they can both understand and relate to their mutual situations of their overwhelming intelligence preventing them from having any sort of real childhood at all. In general it's just really nice to see how much trust Dazai has in his fellow agency members to handle things without him... he knows them well and loves them. 🥹 Something that I always meant to mention after last season but I never did, and I don't know if anyone else said it..... The clause written on the page about how only law enforcement wouldn't believe anything attempting to prove the Agency's innocence -- Tachihara breaking through that condition symbolically represents how he was no longer seeing himself as a Hunting Dogs member at that moment, but a mafia member, so it no longer had any effect on him. Of course, Ranpo gets the ball really rolling with the police in this episode and the next one, but I love that Tachihara is the one who starts it, and what it represents. 💖 The moment where Ango considers killing Atsushi because he overreacts and misjudges the situation haunts me CONSTANTLY, because even if he didn't go through with it thanks to Atsushi awakening..... he was fully intending to. We know he hates his boss' philosophy of prioritizing the many over the individual, but everything that's happened with the Decay of Angels has made him hardened, and desperate..... I don't blame him, not really, but it hurts me to think that he'd be willing to kill someone he /knows/ is important to Dazai, after what happened with Oda, that we know he feels responsible for. :' ) 💔 Kunikida literally cannot ever catch a damn break EVER; the world is determined to break him 😭😭😭 and it worries me ALL the time, after the whole struggle set up for him in Entrance Exam (season 1 episodes 6/7 but canonically light novel #1). The notebook being torn in half, aka his Ideals LITERALLY being broken.... you can't get much more blatant than that. 🫠💔 Hawthorne at the end of last season was captured by Lucy, and thrown into the void behind the door in Anne's room, in case you forgot and was wondering where he was.~ "I have a life-threatening illness where I die without my electronics" most relatable sentence ever spoken, Katai is a big mood. 💀 Also suit and hair slicked back Poe is adorable and hot; the best version of Poe imo 😌👌 and Fukuzawa should have hugged Ranpo when they reunited, I'm JUST SAYING, WE WERE ROBBED OF A FATHER-SON HUG (TO MIRROR THEIR ONE IN UNTOLD ORIGINS) 😭😭😭 (yes, I am leaving comments weeks late, even if they're outdated at the time of posting; just ignore that shhhh-)

Hahaha, I can just IMAGINE the ships and fics that came from that scene of Nikolai, as we’re all like Sigma watching! And I agree, there definitely is this sadness to Nikolai that makes him a compelling character! Definitely agree with your comment about his character! It’s a VERY interesting twist, comparing him to Oda – good thing Dazai didn’t get all yandere for Oda, too! And the metaphor of repressed homosexuality is something that I could DEFINITELY see! And ahhhh, the comparison to Eren and the birds! YES! I can see that (which is ironic because his va is Zeke’s, Eren’s brother’s in AOT). I agree; I liked Ranpo since the start, but NOT like I do now; seasons 4 and 5 have done worlds for expanding his character and our appreciation for him! I also love the friendly “rivalry” Dazai and Ranpo sort of have with each other. Ahhhh, that notion of Tachihara choosing to view himself as a mafia member over a hunting dog makes TOTAL sense! And YES, Ango nearly killing them all out of duty, panic, etc. is HAUNTING indeed, because you know he would actually do it! Glad we didn’t get to that point! *nervous laughter* Ah, thank you for reminding me where Hawthorne is, hahahaha – get him out of the plot, thank you! 😛 But YES, poor Kunikida…I hate that he’s handless and without his ideals. 🙁I just want him to get a hug…and his hands back. But also, Best Version of Poe indeed! BUT YES, WHERE WAS DADDY AND SON HUGS?! GIVE ME THEM! Thank you for the comments and no worries! You’re never too late! 😀
