OH MY GOSH -- Season One had us walk alongside Canute and Thorfinn in their adolescence, but now...our boys have become MEN and my, HOW DIFFERENT they've become, eh?   

Thorfinn carrying the weight of his sins but moving forward into the light of redemption and peace -- and Canute, accepting the price of power and embracing the darkness surrounding him? I CANNOT TELL YOU ALL how much I loved this episode!

Loved this episode, the contrast between this two characters. gotta say, I was disturbed when suddenly the head of sweyn appeared as the ball. in episode 5 as well on season 2, there is a very brief scene that wasn´t from season 1 of the head alone of sweyn directly falling to the ground. I feel that scene was burned in canutes mind.

The juxtaposition between your reaction to Thorfinn’s smile “LOOK AT HIM LOOK AT HIM” then to Canute’s Hamlet moment “OH SHIT RED FLAG RED FLAG” was quite frankly hilarious. Also perfect thumbnail! I wondered which Canute shot you were going to use but this feels very appropriate. Thorfinn being the biggest ray of sunshine and Canute doing basically a Lelouch pose. Truly an iconic pair indeed. That Top Gun comparison really made me chuckle! Trust me your Einar x Thorfinn ship is totally valid. For me it’s not up there as one of my favourite ships for Thorfinn but how can I deny any love that someone may have for my boy Thorfinn? Platonic, romantic, anything … He truly deserves it all. Also thought you should be aware that Thorfinn’s cannon height is actually 5ft1. Yes. Even as an adult. He is well and truly a short king and we love him for it. Just to compare Levi from AOT cannon height is 5ft2 just to give you an idea. But let me go back to Thorfinn’s smile for second. Now you may understand manga readers pain of anime onlys watching Thorfinn and dissing our man. Not to say I don’t think it’s valid. Because it is. Yukimura definely intentionally designed him that way. He said himself that he always wanted to write a man who denounced violence but he realised that in a Viking world that that individual would need the strength to do so and needed a valid reason to get to this point. And so he started with the prologue arc. But it’s just soo wonderful that I can actually talk about one of my favourite protagonist of all time and finally start to give reasons why to anime onlys. Yeah keeping my mouth shut these past 3 years was torture indeed. You know what’s funny when that Ecclesiastes quote was at the beginning of the chapter and then it followed with Canute’s perspective I was instantly like “oh dear”. Ecclesiastes is notorious for being cynical and nihilistic sooo yeah definitely suits our boy Canute here. Also you were going to reference Monster when you were looking at that quote but then you forgot by the end. Do you remember what you were going to say? (Side note while I would really love to guide you on timelines and ages because I actually think it would enhance your experience I do respect that you don’t want hints or clues. I guess what I’m asking is what you feel comfortable with when it comes to ‘reminders’ from previous episodes? Hope that’s vague enough.) (Also another lil side note. Harald having no heirs doesn’t mean that he never had children. In those times the amount of infant death was astonishing. Sure there would be miscarriage and still births but also infant mortality was a huge thing and it was a big deal for a child to live into their teen and adult years. Just something to remember particularly for this time period.) Canute and Thorfinn are such great foils in this story. One hated his father and the other loved his. Both changed forever by Askeladd. One became a slave and one a slave to a crown. Both have the same end goal but want to achieve it by different individual means. Yukimura you are a genuis! What’s funny when you talked about the Thorfinn x Canute ship not being dead at the end of your discussion is that us in the fandom like to think of the End of the Prolouge as their bad breakup. And what did they do in their post breakup time? Both were depressed but then Thorfinn went to a different country, had some soul searching and found himself in a better place mentally, while Canute did the post breakup bob hair cut and is now talking to his dead dad’s head….Wonder which one is coping better? 😄 Also don’t think this has been mentioned but isn’t it funny that their VA’s are working over time this season? Yuuto being the protagonist in VS, BSD and Tsurune and Kensho being ‘paired up’ with the MC in all 3 too. These VAs are getting shipped in all 3 shows. It really makes me laugh. (Although where the hell is my boy Akutagawa?? Haven’t seen episode 10 yet but he can’t just be in the OP right? RIGHT??) I think that’s it for my long ramble on this one. This is definitely going up there as one of my favourite discussions of yours! Soo soo good! Can’t wait for more Peakland Saga!

Hahaha, I’m glad you enjoyed that reaction and discussion – this may be one of my favorite episodes in the SERIES so far, so the bar is now HIGH! But YES, Canute doing a Lelouch pose! Bwahahaha! I’m glad others are still on board with Einar x Thorfinn as a ship – I’m torn between sometimes shipping them romantically and other times viewing them as platonic besties – either way, I LOVE the relationship they have with one another! THORFINN IS 5’1” - OMG A SHORT KING INDEED! He’s shorter than LEVI, OMG. I CANNOT. I definitely can feel a manga reader’s pain now; I’m very glad y’all didn’t spoil me and let me see this ray of sunshine burst through the screen in real time. :) I cannot imagine the torture of not talking – surely y’all had a space to share manga secrets amongst yourselves online? ;) HA, Ecclesiastes being cynical and nihilistic…fits Canute PERFECTLY. AH, thank you – I’ll have to mention it in the Ep 11 opening, but I was GOING to reference the Monster quote, “It’s easy to kill…you just have to forget the taste of sugar” and talk about how Thorfinn is realizing there’s a possibility to taste the sugar now, whereas Canute is acting like someone actively avoiding diabetes. Ah, thank you for offering but I DO NOT want any information on the timeline at this time. Since we have over half a season left to go, I want to wait and see what the season gives us. I also like to experience with my reactions as if I’m going in without any “help,” so please, no reminders about things I might have missed. I may remember them or go back and notice later, so I want to be able to “figure it out” for myself if that makes sense. But, that IS a fair point about heirs with Harald…thanks for that info! I love the foil that Canute and Thorfinn are becoming towards one another – that’s interesting about their “goals” being the same. I’ll have to bring that up in the next discussion because I definitely want to touch base on that before the episode. HA, yeah, I think Thorfinn may have initially handled the “breakup” worse, but he’s faring much better now than Canute, or at least I think so. But YESSSSSS, the fact that these two are voicing THREE couples in three of my favorite shows this spring is INSANE! I love it, though! Thank you so much for the kind words and comment!! See us in Vinland Saga fandom are pretty chill. So we are just in our bubble having a grand old time waiting for the anime onlys to catch up to our beautiful two men etc. and waiting for all the ‘dudebros’ and ‘bandwagon’ people to get out of our series! 😄 Oh yeah don’t worry about my query over timelines and such! Like I said I respect your decision and just wanted to clarify what you considered ‘help’ so I know for future comments. 🫡 Why did I have a feeling you were going to bring up that Monster quote at some point during Vinland?! To be honest it’s an incredible quote and can be applicable to soo many stories and real life but that’s the genius of Monster.

Also yes Thorfinn is the truest short king! The anime sometimes doesn’t get the consistency of how short he is but hey that’s usual sometimes in anime adaptations

Eh, I can understand that but he's SUCH the Short King! I love that! Picturing him side by side with Levi is hilarious, though, because Thorfinn is so BUFF and Levi is more slender and refined in his muscle definition.

Honestly, I totally understand the want for "bandwagon" and "dudebros" to get out of a fandom and let the true appreciators stay! :3 And yessss, I am seeing now why Monster is a CLASSIC and that line is SO applicable to nearly any series! :) :)
