**FAMILIAL HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

Ooohh, this may be the darkest episode of the series yet, but it's also one of my favorites! Rei gets called back to his father, the "boss" of the organization he and Kazuki work for as hitmen, and his concept of "home" is entirely called into question!

Torn between a duty he was seemingly "born" for and the found family he's forged with Kazuki and Miri, there's a lot that Rei is left to think about, including the big question: Can we change? I have a feeling the rest of this season is going to be a roller coaster towards that answer!

I feel like Rei denying that he has "found true belonging on the outside" was already a defense mechanism. He knew his father wouldn't accept that and that Kazuki would become a target, especially since his father already seems to consider Kazuki to be an issue. But then in the very next sentence Rei messes up anyway, because his father only mentioned "ties" and Rei IMMEDIATELY mentions Kazuki. So his denial of Kazuki being the issue was actually the confirmation that that is indeed the case. Poor Rei :( He just wants Kazuki to be safe.

"Home is where your loved ones are" and Miri's helped Rei to understand that. Rei's boss' home also made me think of the Zoldycks! Either it was inspired or in Japan assassin family homes are behind a gate, have massive grounds, and the main building is up a hill. I love the progression with Kazuki's interactions with Miri. Previously it was Rei being able to explain things in ways that a child of Miri's age can understand. Kazuki still uses words Miri doesn't understand, but he isn't as flustered with trying to give her an explanation that she'll understand. Nor is he as flustered answering her questions, and his answers are now all quite child-friendly. Shipper heart loved that "pointless ties" Kazuki immediately came to Rei's mind. And it's no wonder considering what all Kazuki has done for him, and how he's helped him become more human even before Miri came along. Kazuki on the phone with Rei asking him to say something more than 'sorry' gives off such disgruntled partner vibes. Also immediately after the boss' conversation about light and darkness we get the contrast of the brightly lit, lively apartment Rei shares with Kazuki and Miri, and the dim, empty, and nearly-silent mansion that was Rei's childhood 'home'. Unfortunate thought but the kid-like sparkle in Ryo's eyes could be because he gets off on killing and gathering people's final words. I laughed at your hope he might not be so bad! And the immediate U-turn on that thought. Kinda painful seeing Rei check the clip of his gun and properly arm it just before going to do the job because all those simple movements, that are likely reflexive for Rei to do now, were likely all taught to him by the man he has to go kill...because he got married and wanted to leave the organisation with her. Once again this show does an epic job at portraying kids in a realistic manner. Miri saying "men are such a mystery" is likely something she picked up from overhearing adults say the same thing. And kids can be pretty perceptive, just like Miri with her Mum and Rei. They see more and pick up on more than many adults give them credit for. The animation and choreography for the fighting is fantastic, and it really shows how much effort the animators put into this anime. Rei stole my heart when he said he'd found something worth protecting too. Immediately made me want to protect all three of our little family. And especially when he didn't give Ryo what he wanted. Rei had little choice with fighting his mentor and didn't mean to kill him, but he found the courage to choose his teacher over Ryo and let the man keep his last words. Ryo, the psycho, isn't worthy of them. Thank you though for making this dark moment more humorous. I now have 'I'm On My Way' in my head! Also makes me think of the Phil Collins song in Brother Bear; only Rei's not gonna tell anybody. Rei was in darkness. Both literally because it was late at night, and figuratively because he was deep in his own negative thoughts. But then Kazuki brought light to him and wouldn't leave him to the darkness. Love Kazuki basically being all "Our daughter and I have slaved over a feast for your birthday so your ass is gonna be here and like it even if I have to come and physically drag you back myself!" Also the fact that when setting up Rei's phone he set it up so as he could locate him, just like some parents do with their kids! "You didn't matter much to me. But then you suddenly started cleaning." Kazuki storming into his life and dragging Rei into the world of the living and brightness is what made him start opening his heart to him. Also means Kazuki matters to him now, and it all started with him taking care of Rei in a way he's probably never been treated all his life. Kazuki cleaned up his life and apartment, and made the latter into a *home*. Kazuki's love language is *definitely* taking care of his loved ones. Rei's expressiveness at the end of this episode is just too much for my heart! His shock and happiness that those he cares for/loves would do something like this for him to show their own love for him just fills me with so many feelings. Also makes the hatred for his father grow ever darker; especially with that request!

Rei's waist is so tiny LMAO he really is the director's favourite fanservice device.. and I LOVE it!!!

Something about the organization seems strange....Two of the assassination targets we've seen so far are what we wouuld usuallly think of as "bad guys", Miri's dad was implicated in human trafficking, and the other was a gang leader supposedly creating tension with rival gangs, disturbing "peace". Does the "organization" bear a resemblencce to the family relationship to the queen in Black Butler??

momo

There's something so disturbing and scared about how the organization will get in the way of things that would affect the hitmen work. Like how Kazuki had a wife- it makes me think that they noticed he'd have a kid soon causing more distraction to his life than just a lover. AGGH THIS MAKES ME STRESSED I WANT JUST THE KIND AND FLUFFY TIMES

romaniablack

Right?! I just want this little found/made family to be able to move forward! We need all the fluffy times we can get in this series, eh? Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

THAT, I don't know about! It's been so long since I read Black Butler I forgot about that, haha! But that could be? I didn't know if it was a "dirty deeds done dirt cheap" scenario...only not dirt cheap? Hahaha! I guess we'll see, but thanks for the comment! :D

romaniablack

Yessss, great point there! Poor Rei, indeed -- he's found this family outside of what he's grown up with and doesn't want to lose them! :3 It makes me really root for him! Thank you for the comment!

That is a very good point that Kazuki is growing and maturing in how to handle his frustration when Miri doesn’t understand what he’s say – I love the subtle development we’ve seen with both him and Rei throughout this series! UGH, my heart when Rei immediately connects Kazuki as the person who would be a “pointless tie.” We’ve seen this romantic trope in other stories, haven’t we? I think so! I love the visual contrast in this episode as well between the “house” that Rei grew up in and his newly established “home” with Kazuki and Miri. And the fact that he’s hunting down a man who’s essentially doing the same thing REI is doing? It HURTS. His line to the man, too? YUP, need to protec these three with all I got! And no problem, that scene NEEDED some levity after being so darn sad! MAN, Ryo was a major UNO REVERSE card. Yup. NEVERMIND. Agreed, this show can be really clever in its dialogue and the choreography used in that fight scene was EPIC. And Kazuki bringing light to Rei in his darker moments? We love to see it. And yessss, Kazuki’s love language being wanting to take care of people and Rei’s being wanting to take care as well (in his own way)? UGH, this show is making me love these characters all the more! And yessss, I just need Rei to cut ties with the organization and his dad, so he can live his own life, darn it! *shakes fist* Thank you for the kind words and comment – now let’s form a prayer circle for the happiness of these three!

oh my goodness I love this series so much.. the only issue is that because it's an anime original, there isn't really merch yet which I'd love to have in my room.. ^-^

I wasn't expecting Ryo to be this psychopathic. I was thinking maybe he's actually a nice guy who's just a little fucked up. Nope. He's really scary. When we found out the organization killed that dudes wife I knew the series wasn't messing around anymore and we need to be worried. I also feel so bad for that couple. I guess Rei's father gave him this job to warn him again what will happen if he betrays the organization and has people he loves. I saw someone say that Kazuki and Rei's hair have similar shapes and now it makes a lot of sense as to why. Seeing that Rei needed someone like Kazuki and Kazuki needed Rei to get better is just so good. They really saved eachother without expecting it themselves. Miri singing happy Birthday and falling asleep was the cutest thing I've ever seen. It was adorable. And Rei's smile?! I need more. If anything happens to Miri and Kazuki I will go into the series and destroy who ever hurt them. Wish you a wonderful day!!

romaniablack

RIGHT?! I was all ready to give him the benefit of the doubt, but NOPE. He's terrifying! @_@ And yes, I feel so bad for Rei's mentor and his wife, trying to leave the organization and being taken out. T-T It definitely shows why Kyu-chan was so serious to Rei about "upsetting" the organization. It definitely feels like a threat from "the boss" to Rei. OOOH, that DOES make sense with Rei and the hair shape being because Kazuki cuts it! :3 The fact that they came together and saved one another and Miri added to that? Yep. Love it. And Rei's smile? Miri's song? My heart CANNOT! And AGREED about Kazuki and Miri! Stay away, "granddad!" Thank you for the kind words and comment and have a great day, too!
