**THRILLER-ESQUE HEADPHONE WARNING**

Well, in one episode we have not only a very kind-hearted, idealistic protagonist in Dr. Tenma, but we also have a very relatable dark, gritty, and politically corrupt world, and a HEAPING dose of mystery surrounding the Liebert children and the abrupt deaths of their parents. 

I love Kenzo Tenma already as a character, but I have a feeling his character is about to go through the WRINGER in this series, but I'm VERY intrigued and on board for the ride!

Oh Dr Tenma we meet once again… You are just going through all my favourite stories aren’t you? 😄 and boy has a real masterpiece been picked. I’m soo happy that you seem pretty much completely blind to this anime as there is one very particular detail about this story (that hasn’t been shown yet) that I think a majority of people know already going in just because of its age and how vital that detail is to the story and how much it is talked about and referenced in anime spaces. To sum all that up I’m just happy you aren’t aware of it and hopefully no one will spoil you. That anxiety and tension you were feeling when no real horror element is happening is such a strength of Monster. That is what a true thriller should be. Just this hum of creeping tension in the background. And can I just say that the music and most importantly SOUND DESIGN is soooo good here. The anime team really knew what moments to focus on to squeeze out as much tension as possible. There are lil moments peppered throughout the anime that still haunt me to this day. To go to the main conflict of this episode I find it soo interesting that Tenma wants to be idealistic and save lives but he still chooses between lives. Now lets say he simply performed surgery on the boy and wasn’t even aware of the mayor. That would have better all around and in a ideal world that’s what should have happened. BUT he was put into an unfair position of being ordered away from his initial post. Now he has a moral choice to make. On one hand the choice is follow orders or go with your morals (the boy came first and he knows he’s the only one to save him) But really isn’t he putting one life over the other too now? It sucks he had to make that choice but he still made it. Yes the life between a child and an adult may be a simple answer but it’s still a moral choice that he made. I know you mentioned that you weren’t sure how many episodes to watch per reaction. Personally I would suggest only one. Yes, it’s a looong series but as you can see with just one episode that there are mysteries set up and I think the format of being able to dissect it one at time would be better. I’m beyond excited for Monster! Not just because I adore it soo much but I think it wonderfully mixes up what you are watching currently. You are quite right that it almost doesn’t feel like an anime. But that’s the beauty of anime. It’s not a genre but a medium.

Yeah, as complicated as Death Note, AoT, or Eva are they still feel anime, If monster was live action it wouldn't seem out of place next to stuff like Twin Peaks or The Wire.

Absolutely! It’s like why on earth would you do a god awful live action Death Note (or any of other garbage ones) when Monster is literally RIGHT THERE READY

I am happy I'm finally seeing the classics, and Monster has been one that's intrigued me so far quite a bit! The sound, the animation, the tension -- it all lends very well to the horror aspects, which has me excited!! Hahaha, I've only watched the second episode at this point, but your one paragraph is part of the argument about idealism that I'll touch on in that discussion, but Dr. Tenma believing he's making the "right decision;" surely that won't be a topic touched upon in the entire series, eh? And yes, I definitely want to do one episode a week -- the discussions may not be crazy long right now, but I have a feeling with this show...it might get there. I'm in for the long haul and I'm okay with that! :) And YES! It will be nice to have a retro, dark, gritty thriller in the midst of what I'm watching! Yes, Alex's reference to Twin Peaks -- I can so see that vibe! I'm buckling in for the journey! :) Thanks so much for the kind words and comment!

Good shout on one episode at a time! Even though I’m soo excited for you to get to certain moments I can be patient particularly as this story is … let’s say … it’s a lot 😄 I adore the themes and topics here and it’s so clear from the 2 episodes you have seen what kinda story this wants to be. There’s a particular theme that is my absolute favourite in fiction and I can’t wait for the discussions that’ll occur once it shows itself.
