**RECITAL-WORTHY HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

I usually hate recaps -- but THIS? THIS I LOVED.

Not only did we get new content, which was glorious, but the editing of this recap was phenomenal. New things were pointed out, notes were taken, and it's a nice preparation for the madness that is End of Evangelion up next.

Thank you to those that recommended I watch this -- I was not disappointed! ^^

Not sure if we can call this a recap, it's more like a remix for the fans. It's interesting what one latches on to, before i rewatched the series through your reactions, my image of NGE is very much Shinji playing the cello (and Pachelbel in particular) and that's hardly in the main series at all. Wait, who's gaslighting who here? 😆 ...i went back and in episode 24 Kaworu says Lilith? as a question and here it was said as a statement, just different subs i guess? Now i might just go listen to the 4 Chord Song by Axis of Awesome.

Nice little preview of EoE madness at the end there 😂 Next week can't come soon enough!

I think 4 is featured so much because it's a number associated with "Death" in Japanese culture. Another number thing I noticed is how the counter on Shinji's walkman constantly switches back and forth between minutes 25 and 26, all throughout the series. Not sure what the actual significance of this is, but from a meta perspective, I think it can retroactively symbolize Shinji focusing on the internal conflict and lessons he experiences in episodes 25 and 26.

REBUILD SPOILERS In Eva, meta perspectives are usually the most illuminating ones, so, yeah, let's keep an eye out for when the walkman gets to 27.

Alex Kornejo

I'm half kidding but the beauty of Eva is that there's been so many contradictory statements about it over the years that's it's a very 'Death of the Author' kind of work, so even if Anno himself contradicts something you see in it you can just go 'Well, that's just like opinion man' and keep your pet ship or theory afloat.

Ahhhhahahaha, that's so crazy! With a series like this, though, I can see that! I like how it was said in the Discord, that there's so many interpretations with things, you have to just go with it -- I love hearing ALL the various interpretations, though, even if I don't get on board with some of the theories, haha! And thank you for the spoiler tag! :)

Patreon eating my comment again... (third attempt) Anyway, Pachelbel's Canon is not a Bach piece, it's by Johann Pachelbel and his one big hit (at least post-humously). Plenty of Bach in Eva though. (The Canon's creation history is actually not really known, but one popular theory says it was written for the wedding of Bach's older brother, so the 9-year old J.S. Bach would have probably heard it). 'Vorspier' is a Doitsu-fication of German "Vorspiel", which today mostly means 'foreplay', but is also a literal translation of 'prelude' (pre + lude, 'before playing'). What Shinji is playing is the prelude of Violoncello Suite No. 1. Asuka's piece is a *gavotte*, music inspired by a Frech folk dance, done in the style of a rondo (a family of patterns. None of them have lyrics as far as I know. The Bach piece featured prominently in EoE does have lyrics though (though the movie uses an instrumental version). It's often sung in English as 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' though that translation is done for singing and essentially new lyrics on the same theme (which is basically 'Jesus is awesome, I love Jesus'). Wikipedia has both translations (and no Eva spoilers...)

I'm feeling nice and refreshed on all the context going into End of Evangelion again after watching your reaction to this. Very much looking forward to the remaining films, but honestly I feel like nothing ever quite feels the same as the series after this. The pacing of the films is much different imho and you aren't given as much space to breathe with each new thing that is introduced. Not that the movies aren't amazing, I just miss that feeling of pondering Evangelion one episode/story beat at a time :)

britegirl

The Lilith thing is a translation issue, in some translations of ep 24 (on Netflix for example) they have Kaworu state directly that the basement creature is Lilith, while in other translations like the one you watched they translate it more as a question like "Is this Lilith?" (I think it is supposed to be more of a rhetorical question or an exclamation of disbelief like "it can't be!" or something). So that probably led to the confusion in the comments.

britegirl

Also I find the meta-narrative about otaku and escapist culture really fascinating. But I think I'm gonna save my thoughts on that stuff for an extra long comment on your EoE video :P I think the comments may end up rivaling the video in length loll

romaniablack

Yeah, I would have to go back and see, but I think in the episode he said "mother" instead of "Lilith" so that may have been my confusion! :)

romaniablack

I swear I didn't hear Kaworu call Lilith...Lilith, hahahaha, maybe I am gaslighting! hahaha #IhavebecomeGendo clearly...but yes, a nice way to celebrate NGE with a 4 chord song! Isn't that funny how memory works? Now, having seen this, I'm going to associate a lot with NGE and Shinji playing the cello...and yeah, hardly in there at all, but so integral to the story, right? Thanks for teh comment!

romaniablack

Thank you!! The script for EOE is at 27 pages and in the five parts I Have, I've recorded 1 part of the discussion and it was an hour and a half...so....it's going to be...a lot, but I hope you all enjoy it once it's done! :)

romaniablack

I love the concept of it representing the lessons and experiences he had in Episodes 25 and 26 on Shinji's Walkman; nice pointing that out along with the significance of the #4! Thanks for the comment! :D

romaniablack

Ahhh, thank you so much for the kind words!! I can agree that the episodes have that "breathing room" whereas the films will have a much more limited span of time to get what they want accomplished...it's definitely going to make things INTERESTING! :)

2022-10-17 09:15:01 Thank you for all the information! *facepalm* for thinking Pachelbel's Canon was by Bach -- I swear, it's because my school's music program was cut in middle school! >.< Haha, but I really appreciate the information on these pieces! That makes a lot of sense and I appreciate it! :)
