This week, I dive into Chapters 12-16 of the web serialization (Chapters 5 and 6 of the English translation) and WOW -- MXTX is just ready to set the foundation of the story up in these chapters, eh?

Even if we're not sure how it's going to play out yet, there are major players on the board, Hua Cheng's mysterious backstory (or lack thereof), Xie Lian acting like the old man amongst all the youth, and setting up the dynamic of our beautiful LITERAL POWER COUPLE of San Lang and Xie Lian as we brace for the next major arc of the story: BAN YUE! WOOHOO!

There's a lot to fangirl about this week -- just let me rot endlessly in my theories, hahaha! I can see you all cackling at me now...

Thank you for watching with me and for all the support!

No matter what version, I always love the exposition dump. It always gets me hyped up for when Xie Lian finally meets Hua Cheng/San Lang. And it adds to the mystery that is Hua Cheng. All the while, Xie Lian’s like: “sounds hot, tell me more” XDDDD Like I mentioned in the donghua ep version, the tiny scene w/ Mu Qing, Feng Xin, and Xie Lian is my favorite bonus from the donghua to this whole expo dump. Idk, I just think it adds a layer of angst bc they they used to be this well-known trio, and now they’re estranged. I can’t wait until you get to see more of their interactions cuz I have feelings. That’s all I’ll say about that. Oh! And since I didn’t comment on the last part, I wanted to include part of my novel-spoilery ramble from back when we watched the end of the Xuan Ji arc in the donghua. Since you’ve already read the part in the novel, it’s no longer spoilery XD What I mentioned were just the differences between the novel and the donghua scene of the Xuan Ji reveal and Xiao Ying’s death. To start, I just think the conversation about General Pei between Ling Wen and Xie Lian, I think, is funnier in the book. In the book, it starts like “oh has General Ming Guang ever had any intimate female friends?” and Ling Wen says “why do you ask?” Xie Lian: “oh nothing really just bc I’m being chased after a dozen dead brides” and then Ling Wen says something along the lines of: “no I mean, Pei has had too many lovers that makes the question hard to answer.” It cracks me up bc the comedic timing of the whole scene was done so well and it was only in word-form. And I think that shows how good MXTX is as a writer to be able to create this effect without any visuals. Another thing that surprised me was that they didn’t really include is the fact that when Xiao Ying dies, she asks Xie Lian if she was helpful to him as if asking if her death wasn’t be meaningless. Xie Lian, meanwhile, thinks to himself - her helping didn’t actually help much either. He could bind Xuan Ji easily with the help of his bandages, and Xiao Ying hitting Xuan Ji wouldn’t have done any damage anyways. And so Xie Lian says, her death would be considered meaningless. BUT bc he’s a cinnamon roll, he lies and thanks her for all her help. However, Xiao Ying tells him that she knows she wasn’t actually any help and then passes mid-sentence. This whole interaction really changes the whole tone/meaning of the scene in my eyes. It touches on the whole topic of the fragility of mortality. Compared to these gods/goddesses/ghosts that live forever, the regular humans don’t have the luxury to be carefree with their lives. So their temporary lives should be cherished very preciously. It also shows how the gods don’t even mourn for a mortal dying, they’re rather indifferent to it. That to the gods, who despite relying so much on the help of mortals to sustain their status in the Heavens, they care very little about mortal lives. It gives us some more insight to Xie Lian’s character. He still thinks like a god, but still willingly offers kindness during her final moments. But I can understand why, audience-wise, they wouldn’t include little details like this. The donghua focused more on the action scenes and the animation, while the novel, of course, is trying to set up the plot as a whole. That’s why I’m so glad you’re actually reading the novel, so you can’t get the whole context. Anyways, it’s hilarious that Xie Lian is the boomer of the Heavenly Realm. It’s sad too, how everyone shuns/belittles/ignores him, but the fact that he tries to interject into the Heavenly Discord with recipes and fun facts I can’t XDDDD I love him, he’s just trying his best. Yesss the ox cart scene. It’s so iconic, and every version is done so well. San Lang attempting to charm his way to his gege’s heart. The Ghost Festival part was different—surprisingly, the novel version was much sillier than the donghua made it out. It’s gory/horrific, as MXTX does, but I laughed when the ghost prisoners roll up with their beheaded heads in their hands. Also, when they start fighting over whether or not the body holding them is the right/wrong one. Such a shame the donghua had to change it for censorship reasons, but it’s such a minor thing that I can’t be too mad about the change. I hope the audio drama comes back. I was so looking forward to listening to it. But, as you mentioned, it was all worth the $10 XDDD Anyways, looking forward to the next reaction!!!

Yesss, these chapters were great and “sounds hot, tell me more” YES! XD It’s going to be interesting to see what we get with these characters as the story unfolds! I love how MXTX is able to convey that sharp-witted humor in her writing that the jokes just WORK! It’s great and that was a great example of it! That’s a REALLY interesting point with Xiao Ying in all this – how dare MXTX not tell us what she was trying to say! @_@ But that’s a great point about the gods and their treatment of mortality and mortals and how XL is slightly different from the rest… I agree, I definitely want to see the full context, so I’m happy I can read the novel as well! I hope the audio drama comes back, too! *fingers crossed* I love Xie Lian, too! He’s trying his best, darn it! And yes, MXTX has such dark humor and it makes the ghost festival scene so much fun! And SL is soooooo trying to impress XL! :) Thank you so much for the kind words and comment! :)

One of my favourite moment in chapter 6 is the conversation about the ashes. I love this moment in particular: Hua Cheng: There's a custom in the Ghost Realm where if a ghost has a special someone, they entrust their ashes to that person. And I agree with Xie Lian, I think that's so romantic. And the way Hua Cheng said that he doesn't care if the person who have his ashes disintegrate them or just scatter them for fun. That's sad.

Yes, it's sad that something Xie Lian views as romantic is something San Lang "seems" indifferent about -- no spoilers, hints, or clues though! ;) I'm sure that's not your intent, but I am excited to see how the "ashes" plotline goes as we go along! :) Thanks for the comment!
