I don’t know if you found this in your research, but the Cubs manager David Ross, is a former catcher who also played for the Cubs. Contreras was his backup before he retired after 2016.

Yepez being a big boy means he's probably not that quick at running around the bases. You replace a guy like him with a pinch runner so that the runner is able to make it from 2nd base to home plate on a hit to the outfield. It's just a strategy to help manufacture a run in a close game. Also being that late in the game he probably isn't getting another turn to bat so taking him out of the game there is inconsequential.

That is a good point -- it was definitely a good strategy and it being in the 8th inning was a good decision; that makes a lot of sense! Thanks for your comment; the pinch runner was really interesting to see in action in the game!
